Don't forget Bowman. Having him and Willis back there makes it nearly impossible to run between the tackles. Not taking anything away from Smith, but the Niners have added great pieces to create that D--it's not just one guy. That being said, Miller also benefits a lot from having Dumervil on the other side too.

I wouldn't say "a lot." Does he benefit from having him? I think you can say that...but Von still gets plenty of double teams with Doom on the other side getting one on one matchups...and he's still beating those double teams more often than Doom is beating his one on one matchup. It's not a knock on Doom (well maybe somewhat..but that's another story)..it's just a testament to how incredible Von is.

It's no secret. Doom benefits from Von more than Von benefits from him.

It's close. Aldon Smith only needs 3 more sacks (and has 6 games to do it) to set the record for most sacks in a players first two years...in NFL freaking history. That puts him ahead of Reggie White and Derrick Thomas.

Both guys are badass. But I gotta go homer with Von Miller. Reason? The better overall player. Von Miller kills Smith in advanced statistics. PFF has Von Miller at +60.1, Aldon Smith has a measly +14.1 in comparison. Don't get me wrong, I think Smith is a fantastic player, but Von Miller is a once in a lifetime talent.

Yeah, I agree with this. I don't think it's really close. Not knocking Smith, he's a good player but Miller is just special.

I have no problem with people liking Von better. What is stupid is the, "and it's not even close" comments.

The question I pose is this, and I think this is what separates them.

Von Miller can be the cornerstone, the building block of a defense. He's a franchise-caliber defensive player. Can the same be said for Aldon at this point? Like I said in a previous post, I will not lessen what Aldon has done on the field in his year and a half, but is he a complimentary piece to the whole or is he the piece that fuels the machine? I think the answer is fairly obvious that he is a complimentary piece while Von is THAT Denver defense.

If you look at the stats its really not. Smith is great but Miller is just next level right now.

Aldon-19 QB hurries, 32 "stops" (in PFF's words an "offensive failure that includes sacks")

Von- 37 QB hurries, 37 "stops."

And if you don't like PFF's value of "stops." Advanced NFL stats..

    Aldon- 13 TFL

    Von- 23 TFL
Miller drops back into coverage more often and somehow still gets more pressure on the QB.

Pretty easy to see who the better player has been.

Even in light of Aldon's incredible performance, Miller takes home DPOW award.

Definitely Von and I really don't think it's close. Note that it's no slight on Aldon Smith as he is already very good, and should become great.

Von, on the other hand, is already firmly in the discussion for DPOY and looks to like he could very well be a once in a generation type OLB.

Because as good of a pass rusher as Aldon is, he hasn't shown be more than above average at best against the run.

Von, on the other hand, is already elite at every facet of the game.

I am a huge fan of von Miller (homer maybe) but they are all great players (incorporating Watts from a recent post).

von Miller is a monster and does exactly what the Broncos need him to do.
