They are negotiating with Wright and Dickey a year before they become free agents precisely because they don't want to repeat what happened with Reyes. It has nothing to do with a down year or a good year.
They had reservations about length of contract with Jose, but they figured so did everyone else, and they thought they would be able to resign him in the end. They obviously miscalculated. They do not want to make the same mistake with Wright or Dickey.
Despite what Jeff states are theiir #1, 2 & 3 scenarios, if they can't reach extension agreements with either of them, they are gone. Either they'll trade them at or after the winter meetings, or of they can't get their price, they'll go into the season with them and trade them in July. Believe me, they won't just let them walk at the end of next season without getting something in return.

He was injured in 2009 and had a Thyroid problem in both of those two years.
That's why they didn't negotiate with a year remaining on his contract.
Dickey and Wright have had much better previous seasons. And why they are negotiating with them.

Reyes coming off a down year was a perfect time to extend him. It's called buying low.
For what?
The thyroid thing was just diagnosed in 2010...and then it was fine. That's not why they didn't re-sign him.
It had a lot to do with the new FO coming on board and Reyes not being particularly good over the prior 2 seasons. For a team with money issues its understandable to an extent that the new FO didn't rush into throwing an extension to a guy who didn't play all that well or very often.
The FO might not have even been allowed to spend even if they wanted to
Thyroid problem, hamstring problem, constipation . . the bottom line is they still wanted to retain him. They totally misjudged the market. If they had it to do over, they would extend him before he had a chance to walk. Now they have a chance to do it over with David and R.A.
Naturally, you don't try to extend mediocre players. But it is stupid to make contract decisions like that based on a single season's performance. Do you think they signed Niese to an extension in 2012 because he had a fabulous 2011?
