Hayes and Cisco call players only meeting

James Ham November 17, 2012 Regular Season

After another embarrassing loss in front of their home crowd, the Sacramento Kings are beginning to show major cracks. Just nine games into the 2012-13 season, veterans Chuck Hayes and Francisco Garcia called a players’ only meeting last night while media members waited anxiously outside their locker room door.

“Very frustrated,” Hayes told Cowbell Kingdom following the loss to Atlanta. “We came in with a good mindset, but things are going bad right now and we’re starting to break and we can’t have that.”

The Kings have had a rough 10 days. Suspensions to rookie Thomas Robinson and third-year big man DeMarcus Cousins left the team short-handed and the losses have begun to pile up.

“Obviously we want people to know that we’re not satisfied with what’s going on,” forward Jason Thompson told a group of hungry reporters. “So we thought it was only right to make each other accountable and say what was on our minds because at the end of the day, when we put our hands together, we say ‘family’ and we mean it.”

Family or not, the level of tension in the room was palpable.

“We’re tired of losing,” said Tyreke Evans. “(Atlanta) came in here and did whatever they wanted, got easy baskets. We worked hard on defense in Colorado and then we come out here at home and in front of our home crowd, we (lose) by 15 or 20 every night.”

For the last few seasons, the Kings have hidden their failures behind their youth and inexperience. Friday night, Hayes had a very clear message to his team.

“You know, you can only say the word young for so long,” said a fiery Hayes. “You know, you’re young if you only have 40 games in your career. You’re young if you only have 80. Soon as you crack into your second, third, fourth year, fifth year, you know, you’re not young anymore.

“You’ve done seen every play call,” he continued. “You’ve been to every arena. You’ve done guarded most of the players in the league at your position. The word young shouldn’t be thrown around no more. We’ve got to start taking accountability.”

Glad this happened. It needed to go down.

For whatever reason, it doesn't even look like we're trying to win out there. It's pathetic and embarrassing. This is a way better team than they're showing. We all know this.

Smart needs to get his lockerroom under control.

Tyreke - "We’re tired of losing,”. Then do something about it and learn how to fraggin shoot a jumper, you had a chance to change something, but you are just a waste of a pick.

He hit 2 nice looking 3's tonight.

I don't think it's all whether or not he can shoot, I think it has become about him being confident also.

Tyreke did well tonight when it came too shooting outside. Anyone feel confident that going forward his jumper is going to fall? I also got to watch him go 1 on 3 too many times tonight and dribble penetrate shoot. They guy just cannot play a position, he cant shoot for a SG and he can't pass for a PG. For the 3rd straight game Tyreke was one of the worst 2 players in the +/- category. The only thing keeping Johnson from being one of the 2 worst was reduced minutes.

+/- Isn't a very telling stat.. Tyreke looked much better than many of the other players including

    DMC
    Johnson
    Isaiah <-- worst
    T-Rob
    Thornton
    Hayes

Isaiah was ABUSED on defense allowing Teague to hit his average in the first 6 minutes
    T-Rob was pretty useless
Thornton shot the ball decently, but was abused on defense and turned it over 4 times.
Johnson makes Tyreke look like Ray Allen
    Hayes not enough playing time
DeMarcus couldn't make layups let alone jumpers
And Brooks was good only in the 2nd quarter

So please as much as you hate Tyreke don't blame last night on him since he was actually productive and shot over 45%

I disagree about Tyreke. He had a good night shooting the ball (in limited shooting) outside but your just looking at the individual stats and not how he factors into a whole game. He was making open shots (3 of them) because his defender is willing to let him take those open shots, which means his defender is helping out elsewhere. If today is the day that Tyreke starts becoming a outside threat then teams will have to gameplan him differently, but do you think this was the start of Tyreke becoming a outside threat? Or do you think tomorrow he will go back to being the old Tyreke? Tonight Tyreke was just a little less garbage than other nights. If he is going to play SG he needs to be a threat to score 20 from outside not just 6 since when is 3 made shots from outside the paint by a SG considered a good game for a SG? if he is going to play PG then he needs to have the skill to distribute the ball, if he is going to play SG he needs to have the ability to light it up from outside, to this date he has showed me neither.... We are not going to win until we build a team of basketball players instead of a team athletes.

When it comes down to it its guys like Tyreke and James Johnson are hurting this team, they are part of the problem. You look at all the teams we play, they are built like a NBA team, they break down the defense and they pass the ball to outside players who can take the long 2's and 3's. The Kings can't do that. We break down the defense and we pass to open outside players and they look to dribble penetrate and go 1 on 3. That is not winning basketball

You watch Jimmer play and his defender is beyond the 3 point arc guarding him, you watch Tyreke play and his defender is down close to the paint getting in everybody else way. Tyreke does not have the ability to make his defender come out and guard him and that is a major problem that does not show up in Tyreke's individual box score.

Tyreke wasnt wide open... And comparing Jimmer and Tyreke's shooting is ridiculous. If he can play with that kind of efficiency we will win a lot of games

The point went right over your head, its not about just their shooting its about the defender and where he has to be, with Jimmer he is out on Jimmer leaving the rest of the court open, with Tyreke the defender is down low effectively guarding Tyreke because Tyreke can't shoot, and also help guarding another player and at the same time he is in the lane for penetration. Basketball is a team game, if your taking points away from another player your hurting the team.

No we wont win games with that kind of efficiency. Basketball is more than about efficiency. If you have a team full of players who shoot 60% but only average 4 points a game that is efficient but you will end the season 0-82.

2 of those 3 he made no one was near him. If we are going to get excited with 3 made outside shots from our SG we are in trouble.

The point is if he continues to shoot the way he had, teams won't be able to sag off of him anymore, he was affecting from outside last night and if he continues to add onto that, he's going to be scary. Also even if his shot continues to be mediocre, we can't have Johnson on the floor as well, leading me back to the point of starting Jimmer Reke and Salmons or Thornton. Leaving passing lanes because the defense has to play the other two honest allowing Tyreke to slash and penetrate and to give Boogie some more room. And I understood the argument, my counter was if he continues to shoot with this efficiency defenses will start to play him honest

Its 1 game and 3 shots. Do you really trust judgement in 1 game or the last 350 games. Expecting this to be the norm is probably wishful thinking.

His shot has not been mediocre, it IS horrible. He is probably the worst shooting SG in the NBA.

Your taking way too much stock in 1 game. He is hitting about 10-15% of his shots this season outside of the paint, that is horrid.

@mr_jasonjones John Salmons gets the Kings talking about their problems http://t.co/Kz2lvbgE
I would pay good money to see Jimmer's face when $h!t hit the fan in that locker room. He probably tucked into his locker and didn't say one thing! LOL

He probably said, "Hey you guys, I'm sorry to interrupt but since none of this involves me... I'm just gunna head out and get home to my wife."
