honestly my gut says we will be looking for a new left fielder at the trade deadline next year if we are in contention. i really hate this signing.

^ I'd really like to know how your gut can explain how you hate this signing. Everything about it is excellent risk/reward for the Jays.
Bill James projections on Fangraphs has Melky Cabrera at .284/.338/.414 and I think if those numbers end up being accurate, the $8m per year will be fine. Also, If Wilner is correct and this signing was made possible by the $8m acquired from the Marlins, then it really offsets the risk of putting him out there. I like it a lot better than starting the season with Eric Thames, that's for sure.
The final paragraph from the fangraphs.com article (Melky Cabrera Follows Marlins to Toronto) sums this up pretty well...
We were waiting to see who might take a chance on Melky Cabrera. The answer is Toronto, where Alex Anthopoulos doesn’t seem to be afraid of anything. Not that there’s a whole lot here in particular to be afraid of. At two years and $16 million, Cabrera doesn’t even have to be good to be worth it. And Cabrera could be really good.
For those who are concerned about Melky's rapid improvement in 2011 and first 2/3s of 2012 and it's possible correlation to his PED bust- don't forget that Melky was a touted prospect who broke in at a young age with the Yankees posting mediocre numbers for a few seasons, then started to seriously improve at age 26 with the Royals. That is normal baseball development trajectory right there.
SS Jose Reyes
LF Melky Cabrera
RF Jose Bautista
DH Edwin Encarnacion
3B Brett Lawrie
CF Colby Rasmus
1B Adam Lind
C JP Arrencibia
2B Emilio Bonifacio
That is a stacked lineup. If they can improve on Lind... wow

Minor issues her but issues nonetheless but you prolly don't bat lind and rasmus back to backas they both have awful splits against LHP and they would be easy to neutralize come late innings.so in ths case it woiuld prolly go lind. JPA, rasmus. This of course assuming JPA is still here which I doubt.
Probably alone on this but Id like to see Cabrera bat 5th behind Encarnasion and Lawrie bat second.
Essentially you have the top and bottom of the order filled with speed demons and the middle of the lineup guys can get on base and hit for power.
How is adding TDA insignificant?
I already know it will take our catcher of the future along with our other top prospects and Ramsus. Still for Upton it'd probably be worth it imo as long as the price isn't too steep, and yes it might be, but who knows really.
I was proposing Ramsus, TDA, probably Gose, and other prospects.
That isn't an insignificant package if AA deals the catcher he's holding onto for dear life.
I that good enough, who knows really.
