Colangelo speaks on previous draft mistakes

Obviously he is not going to name anyone on current roster though.
During a Q&A discussing how teams prepare for the draft, Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star asked Toronto Raptors president and general manager Bryan Colangelo who he would pick as his worst selection.

"I had a draft selection in Phoenix, No. 22 [in 2002]. I picked a kid named Casey Jacobsen from Stanford and Tayshaun Prince went 23rd. I missed because we had Shawn Marion and felt Prince was more or less a duplication. But I made it up by taking Amar'e Stoudemire at No 9. And then a kid Paul Millsap went 47th [in 2006]. And at 35, we took P.J. Tucker. That was a mistake."

Ironically, Tucker currently plays for the Suns and he's part of their rotation this season.

Colangelo has been in charge of the Raptors since 2006 and his first round picks include Andrea Bargnani, DeMar DeRozan, Ed Davis, Jonas Valanciunas and Terrence Ross. Those five players are still with the Raptors.

This was the most interesting part. Talking about Drummond.

Picking eighth, I passed on somebody I consider a top-five talent in the draft because we felt like he didn’t have the right mental makeup. I passed on someone we thought was a top-three physical specimen because we felt he wasn’t the right fit for our team and didn’t have the right mental makeup.

he passed on drummond simply because we have a longjam at the 4 and drafted big val the year before. Im no scout, nor did I even watch much NCAA, but drummon was a legit talent, you couldnt pass him on even if you had depht at your frountcourt. I would've rather seen drummond rot on the bench than terrance ross. BC ****ED UP .

    I find this interesting:

Picking eighth, I passed on somebody I consider a top-five talent in the draft because we felt like he didnít have the right mental makeup. I passed on someone we thought was a top-three physical specimen because we felt he wasnít the right fit for our team and didnít have the right mental makeup.
I had a draft selection in Phoenix, No. 22. I picked a kid named Casey Jacobsen (287 career NBA games) from Stanford and Tayshaun Prince went 23rd. (Prince is now eighth all-time in Detroit Pistons scoring.) I missed because we had Shawn Marion and felt Prince was more or less a duplication. But I made it up by taking Amare Stoudamire at No 9. And then a kid (Utahís) Paul Millsap went 47th (in 2006). And at 35, we took PJ Tucker. That was a mistake.
Many of us here feel that we passed on Drummond because we had Jonas and Drummond was a duplication. I hope that doesn't come back to bite us in the ***.

wasnt that bad..... brandon roy got hurt so turns out he wasnt a great pick.. aldridge would have been better but thats about it.. and there was no way we could have known about rajon rondo.. ruday gay aswell but it wasnt a brutal pick.. that was a terrible draft class and at least we werent the ones who drafted adam morrision .. only 3 people in that draft have ever been an all star not including rondo andrea was probably the 2nd or 3rd best pick in that draft...

Rondo (but cant blame him there)
    Aldridge
    Gay

could he have been talking about when he picked derozen? maybe jennings?

Things will always work out in the end, but if you want them to turn out a certain way... You need to make it happen.

I don't think he's made any mistakes via draft since his time in Toronto.

    Derozan was picked 9th.

He was definitely talking about 2012 draft.

He's always been a weak player in the FA market. Always known to overpay, even in his Phoenix days.

His trades are hit and miss. Though for every bad trade he makes, he makes 1.5-2 good trades.
