Would you have (Miami Marlins edition)???

Basically my question is would you have traded Castro for what the Marlins gave up?

Now I am sure we would have had to had sent some additional stuff with it, perhaps a Vitters or Jackson and then something else small, but my basic question is would you have done it?

Using Ronins salaries from the mock thing trading off Castro (but nothing else because well I don't want to speculate on what it would have been, but we all know that the deal could have been done pretty easily because while the one was a top 100 spect the other was alright and Castro is definitely more valuable than Escobar).

And thats without a 3B. According to Jim Bowden we could get someone like Youkilis to play 3B for around 9 million a year, which still puts us only around 106 million dollars or with 14 million to play with (assuming a 120 million dollar budget). Now I know that in the future Reyes gets expensive, but we also lose Soriano after another year.

I don't know if I would have done it or not, but honestly I think that this team is pretty good. A lineup of:

DeJesus
Youk
Rizzo
Soriano
Buck
Barney
Bonifiacio

Wouldn't be too bad, and a rotation of Garza/Johnson/Buehrle/Shark/Wood would be solid too, not to mention we still could have signed Baker for the 5th spot as well.

Bullpen is a little weak, but manageable.

I don't know I think with that trade that would be a team that could possibly be ready to compete in 2013.

Would you have made the trade if given the chance of sending Castro+ for basically the Miami Marlins (sans Mike Stanton)?

I voted no, but I could be swayed either way. That team becomes competitive much quicker, maintains payroll flexibility with soriano and johnson coming off the books, and would be a lot of fun to watch. That being said, I really really dislike paying Jose Reyes and Mark Buerhle that much money for that long, and I could see both becoming albatrosses. I'm fine with paying top dollar for top talent, but I don't want to put a lot of money into a player who's value comes from his speed when he's getting older and has a history of leg problems.

The backloadedness of a couple of those deals are going to be pretty ugly. And considering how far away the Cubs are, we might have just been looking at the 2012 Marlins results in Cubs uniforms.

Trading Castro and taking on $50 million is salary a year for the next several years is a terrible idea. The Cubs would have never done that. And as you can see by the deal that was made, woul dnot have had to given Castro up for those guys.

I'm not sure if I would have done it. I'd have to put some more thought into it. Although I really don't think Reyes' contract is terrible and I'm not sure why others think it is.

I didn't like Reyes or Burhle at that money as Free agents. I like it even less for Castro + that

No. Reyes is a stud but I'll take Castro and run. Not a huge fan of either Johnson or Buerhle.

What about for Rizzo? Why are do many willing to play with Castro ideas but Rizzo gets piles and piles of credit?

Theo would've been ran out of town if he traded Castro for those guys. The Jays didn't give up anyone close to him in value.

At this time, I would not. The Jays were at a different place than the Cubs. The Jays spent the last few years acquiring as many assets as possible. The shot the moon a few times and ended up with Bautista and Encarnacion in the heart of the lineup for very little. They looked for any assets that were undervalued and picked them up while not worrying about addressing holes at the major-league level. This deal was different from the Jays perspective. They were going after a specific need, which would bring their team to true play-off contenders. Acquiring these back loaded contracts really only makes sense at that point. If the Cubs were to make such at trade at this point, it wouldn't address all the Cubs needs and it would still leave quite a few holes and a lot less money to address it.

The Cubs need to do what the Jays were doing 2-3 years ago. Getting Rasmus and Yunel Escobar without giving up any serious long term assets. Brett Lawrie for Marcum. Opened up a hole in the short term, but got them another cost controllable asset. Lomo is a perfect target for this strategy, but at some point the Cubs should have some definite answers and some definite holes, and that is when this strategy should be employed. I know quite a few people complained about the Cubs going cheap last year and seemingly this year. But it is important. The Cubs need the space to audition players. Whether it's a middling-prospect like Samardzija to the rotation, or getting a cheap FA to re-establish value like Maholm. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but it is important and I feel it is the best way to build a team.

Not everything can or should be answered by throwing money at it.
