Royals sign Jeremy Guthrie to 3 year/25 mil deal

The Royals announced that they signed right-hander Jeremy Guthrie to a three-year contract through 2015. Excel Sports Management represents Guthrie, who hit free agency this offseason after splitting the 2012 season between the Rockies and Royals. Guthrie will earn $25MM over the course of the three-year, Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star reports (on Twitter). He'll earn $5MM in 2013, $11MM in 2014 and $9MM in 2015.

Ever since I can remember this guy was always about potential. Potential that will never pan out. KC overspent but they needed SP depth and Guthrie gives that to them.

Somewhere in America, Edwin Jackson is dancing like a little school girl. If Guthrie can get 3/25 mill, there is no reason EJax can't get 5 years and at least 60 mill.

Guthrie even had his valued diminish after his disastrous start in COL last year.

Orioles did well in that trade. Got Hammel and Lindstorm (who later netted them Joe Saunders, who won two playoff games for them)

Santana and now Guthrie. A lot of money for a pair of starters who weren't very good last year.

Vic Mackey: You better figure out how much you hate me. And how you're going to deal with that. 'Cause I'm not going anywhere.

This sums up every sports interview, ever.

The consensus is that the Royals were ready to go, all they needed was some SP, so they respond by spending 40 million on Ervin Santana and Jeremy Guthrie. No wonder they always stink.

A mid rotation starter for roughly $8mil a year is not that bad. Look at the contracts guys like Lilly or Wolf got.
