Petraeus was never going to run for president anyways, and he's serving under Obama to boot. So just because he's been talked about by Republicans doesn't mean much.

I don't have his expertise, obviously, but... people are hardwired to see agency where there is none. Instead of coincidences, we see people in control behind the scenes, pulling strings, making things happen. It also gives people a sense that they're "in the know" and aware of things other people can't or won't accept.

I have to admit I actually have no clue. Psychology often seeks to examine the commonality of behavior, or that which is clinically relevant. This is neither.

I would imagine it has more to do with identity than anything else. People for whom their identity is wrapped up with being truthful and persecuted. Having something to rail against. But it's just as much conjecture as anything else.

That's not the explanation I expected. I know some people are like that, but in this case, it seems more of a fairy tale being told by Fox News and the GOP. They think they have some political advantage to be gained here and are willing to do so. Trying to take advantage of the continuing narrative that Obama is somehow un-american.

In the end, it's hard to see this as any different than 9/11 Truthers or people who think we didn't land on the moon. Evidence against the conspiracy will become evidence for it, and no amount of logic or reason or evidence will change their minds, because they know what's going on here.

Like five posts ago, someone seriously predicted, out of thin air, with nothing to support his assertion, that the choice Patreus made was resign or be killed. That's amazing.

As someone who has met patreus a few times I am not surprised he did quit for breaking the rules. He really is a stand up guy from the times I spoke with him in the military.

I don't really know what Republicans have to do with him leaving his position. I'd think any CIA Director that was found to be having an affair, and thus opening himself up to blackmail, would be forced out.
