Cubs made offer to Francisco Liriano

Cubs eye pitching help: The Cubs continue their pursuit of starting pitching with an emphasis on free agents who may be available on short-term deals. ESPN insider Jim Bowden said the team has an offer out to Francisco Liriano. The lefty finished the 2012 season with the White Sox after being traded by the Twins before the July 31 deadline for non-wavier trades.

Liriano has some upside. Pending the contract and the money involved, he can be a nice addition. He's not a true fly ball pitcher, indicated by his SIERA of 4.12. With some adjustments with the possibility of improving his walk rate, it is very realistic he can be a 2.5-3.5 win pitcher.

I wouldn't have any qualms with this move. I wonder, though, if they wait to see if they got Ryu first.

I think this team ideally wants one of Marcum/McCarthy and one of Ryu/Liriano.

    Yuck.

"If we think we’re going to go out in a seek and destroy mission, this team will just laugh at you. They’ve had people running at them for five years; they know how to deal with it. Going out and thinking we’re going to intimidate the Chicago Blackhawks is nuts. They’ve seen all of that before and they just play right through it.

Depends on the offer. He could be a decent idea for a back end bullpen guy or a closer.

I want nothing to do with him starting.

A guy with a 5.0 BB/9 last year would make for some long 9th innings

Not going to get anyone with as much upside for the cost so of course this makes sense for the future last place team.

Don Cooper has a great track record for fixing mechanical and command issues. But Liriano still flew open on every other pitch or was bouncin 58 footers.
I wouldn't want any part of him.

Is half a season of Cooper - August and Sept. really - really going to fix a guy?

The guy has had one good season since 2007. At what point do we say he's simply not very good? He'd be a nice #5 because he has the ability to put up those ridiculous 13K games, but he's just as likely to walk 6 and give up 7 over 3 innings.

Of course not, but Edwin Jackson was wild in Arizona and got back on track in the same timeframe. I know a weak argument, but you hope to see at least some improvement over time. But there was none, heck it seemed that he even got worse.

Don Cooper is not perfect of course and maybe they didn't establish an rapport. But it would be a red flag for me.

Key phrase there is over time THO.

I'd like to see splits but occupado. Even then the significance is in question....
