the red sox are exploring trades for a left-handed hitting first baseman/outfielder, nick cafardo of the boston globe reports (twitter link). Boston would like to complement right-handed hitters such as napoli and jonny gomes, who both have a history of effectiveness against left-handed pitching.

Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com reports that right-hander Vicente Padilla has agreed to a one-year, $3.25 million contract with the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks of Japan's Pacific League.

It's easy to see why he jumped at the opportunity, as it's unlikely that he received a comparable offer stateside. Padilla, 35, posted a 4.50 ERA and 51/15 K/BB ratio over 50 innings last season as a reliever with the Red Sox. There's a decent chance he could resurface in the majors after 2013.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Red Sox and Mike Napoli have made progress in negotiations and that a resolution will likely be reached by next week at the latest.

Napoli agreed to a three-year, $39 million contract with the Red Sox over a month ago, but talks hit a snag after an issue with one of his hips was reportedly found during a pre-signing physical. It's believed that the club wants him to sign an amended contract, possibly with just one year guaranteed. Heyman hears that Napoli is talking to a couple other AL teams, but the Red Sox are still the likely favorites.

MLBTR Napoli and Sox agree to 1 year $5M deal. Incentives to bring the contract close to $13M.

Good ****. Best outcome for us. I personally love it.

Red Sox avoided arbitration with OF Jacoby Ellsbury by agreeing to a one-year, $9 million contract.

He gets less than a $1 million raise from his salary from 2012, when he was limited to just 74 games due to injury. Ellsbury has a chance to strike it rich in a free agent deal next winter if he can manage to stay healthy during his walk year.

Scott Atchison expects to sign a minor league deal this week, but it will not be with the Red Sox.

The Sox offered Atchison a minor league deal after he was non-tendered, but he most likely would have started the year at Triple-A, which "wasn't really what I had deserved and what I had earned with them in that situation," according to the reliever. Atchison pitched through a torn ulnar collateral ligament late in the year but doesn't expect it to be an issue in 2013.
Mets signed RHP Scott Atchison to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Atchison was non-tendered by the Red Sox in late November after he posted a quality 1.58 ERA and 36/9 K/BB ratio over 51 1/3 innings last season. The 36-year-old right-hander pitched through a torn ulnar collateral ligament late in the year, but he should have a good chance at winning a bullpen spot if he shows up to spring training healthy.

According to MLB.com's Greg Johns, the Mariners have reached a one-year contract with Kelly Shoppach.

Shoppach will be in Seattle on Wednesday for a physical, after which the contract should be made official. ESPN's Jerry Crasnick says the deal is worth $1.5 million, with a possible $500,000 available in incentives. The 32-year-old is likely to serve as the Mariners' primary backup this season behind Jesus Montero. He batted .233/.309/.425 over 76 games in 2012.
