Andrew Marchand of ESPN New York hears that the Rangers, Mariners, Pirates and Red Sox are interested in Russell Martin.

The Pirates are the only new team on the list, as the others have been reported by various outlets as pursuing the 29-year-old backstop. The Yankees would also like to retain Martin. Though he's coming off a year where he batted just .211/.311/.403, it's clear that Martin is in high demand.

According to Buster Olney of ESPN.com, the Red Sox are doing "extensive background work" on Mike Napoli.

Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald reported Sunday that Napoli doesn't want to move off of catcher, which would seem to make him not a great fit for the Red Sox given that they already have Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Ryan Lavarnway and David Ross. But, Olney seems to believe there's still room for him in Boston as a guy that splits time between catcher, first base and DH. The Sox could relieve the logjam a bit by trading Salalamacchia.

Former Red Sox outfielder Cody Ross is drawing the most interest from the Phillies, Tigers, Mariners, and, naturally, the Red Sox according to ESPN's Jim Bowden (on Twitter).

The Red Sox had "preliminary talks" with the Marlins about Jose Reyes prior to last night's blockbuster, reports WEEI.com's Rob Bradford. Bradford also looked at why the team might have been interested in the shortstop.

Peter Abraham of The Boston Globe notes (on Twitter) that while Ricky Nolasco and Logan Morrison of the Marlins are available, the Red Sox should be able find better players to fill their rotation and first base/outfield holes.

The Red Sox announced the signing of catcher David Ross to a two-year contract via press release on Wednesday night. Though terms of the contract were not disclosed, the deal is for a total of $6.2 million. (According to an industry source, the deal is a straightforward one, with Ross receiving $3.1 million salaries in both 2013 and 2014.)

According to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman, there's a belief that the Red Sox will try to sign Josh Hamilton.
"Boston wants to do something big and it wouldn't shock me if they became players for Hamilton," an unnamed general manger told the CBS Sports reporter. The Red Sox do have quite a bit of room in their budget, but they also have many holes to fill. Committing over $100 million to one player might not be the wisest strategy at the moment for that organization. The Mariners, Brewers, Orioles and Braves are also known to have interest.

Free agent Lance Berkman told Joseph Duarte of the Houston Chronicle (as reported via twitter) that the Red Sox are one of four teams in "tire-kicking mode" on the 36-year-old free agent. Berkman, who was introduced as a volunteer assistant coach at Rice University (his alma mater), has said that he will make a decision later in the offseason about whether to retire or continue playing. According to Duarte, the Sox, Rays, Phillies and Astros have shown interest in him.

"[T]hey feel like if I can stay healthy that I can help their ballclub and obviously that's flattering," Berkman told Duarte.

Berkman, a veteran of 14 seasons, played in just 32 contests in 2012 due to a right knee that required two surgeries. He was playing on a one-year, $12 million deal with the Cardinals. In 2011, however, he was a force for St. Louis, hitting .301/.412/.547/.959 with 31 homers in 145 gmes, numbers in line with a 14-year career withthe Astros, Yankees and Cardinals during which Berkman has hit .296/.409/.544/.953 with six All-Star berths and six top-10 finishes in MVP balloting.
