Mets sign righty reliever Burke to Minors deal

    http://newyork.mets.mlb.com/news/art...s_nym&c_id=nym
The Mets and right-handed reliever Greg Burke agreed on a Minor League contract with an invitation to Spring Training on Wednesday.

The 30-year-old Camden, N.J., native was signed by the Padres as an amateur free agent in 2006 and made his Major League debut with San Diego on May 16, 2009.

That year, his only season in the big leagues, he appeared in 48 games out of the bullpen, posting a 3-3 record and 4.14 ERA in 45 2/3 innings of work. He struck out 33 batters and walked 23 in that span.

Burke signed with the Orioles as a free agent on Feb. 10, 2012, but he never reached the big leagues and was granted free agency on Saturday.

He spent the 2012 season between Double-A Bowie and Triple-A Norfolk in the Orioles' system, combining to go 3-1 with a 1.53 ERA in 44 games out of the bullpen.
He is another of those Padres guys that Sandy loves so much.

If you can survive Camden, NJ, you can survive major league hitting.

I recall a thread about a certain knuckle baller that everyone made fun of.

I remember the day after the signing, the Newsday Daily Rant was "I wonder how many R.A Dickey jerseys Santa Claus will be delivering this year."

    Everyone including a would-be Bishop.

RA Dickey might have been the single greatest APH in the history of the Mets if not all of baseball.

Burke had a really nice year and posted nearly identical numbers between AA and AAA last year. 7.6 K/9 in AAA and a WHIP under 1 on the year. I can see him making the club out of ST.

The law of average has to benefit the Mets at some point. We have to get lucky at least once with some of these low interest signings.

There are many examples of how a guy like this can be a quality pen arm for a team. I rather they get a few guys like this, than spend big on a pen arm.

Yup. Relievers are a perfect example of, "one man's trash is another man's treasure."
