John Boehner willing to "raise" taxes

House Speaker John Boehner offered Wednesday to pursue a deal with a victorious President Barack Obama that will include higher taxes "under the right conditions" to help reduce the nation's staggering debt and put its finances in order.

"Mr. President, this is your moment," Boehner told reporters, speaking about the "fiscal cliff" that will hit in January. "We want you to lead."

Boehner said House Republicans are asking Obama "to make good on a balanced approach" that would including spending cuts and address government social benefit programs.

"Let's find the common ground that has eluded us," Boehner said while congratulating the president on winning a second term. (Read more: Obama Re-elected as Crucial Ohio Goes His Way.)

The Ohio Republican spoke a day after the president's clear re-election victory. He said conditions on higher taxes would include a revamped tax code to make it cleaner and fairer, fewer loopholes and lower rates for all.

I think the conditions he wants are fair and I think we need to lower the rates and gut the loopholes. I would propose eliminating all the loopholes (including the EITC) and making the top rate around 25-30% and the bottom rate 0%.

Don't worry, they will soon find another way to erroneously blame it on the right.

Yes...I was really hoping for my Gary Johnson win. He was only 270 electoral votes off, so pretty close, right?

I think we're on the verge of late 90's political production again.

I always felt things worked best when we had Clinton and a republican Congress. The Dem Senate throws it off now, but I think there's hope if everyone realizes what's going on.

House Repubs and Obama spent 4 years playing politics with the election in the pipe. Now, as with all productive 2nd terms, I think there can be business done. Obama doesn't have to worry about losing a lib base or pissing off the conservative moderates and the House doesn't have to worry about painting Obama for an election in 4 years.

    Get to work *****es.

We'll have to wait until some bills are actually discussed to see if Boehner is willing to do a legitimate compromise. If he proposes $1 in tax raises for every $20 in tax cuts, that's not real compromise. I also don't think real compromise would be 1-2% tax raises across the board in exchange for dumping Obamacare.

It doesn't matter what he wants or offers. He will get a bill from the senate that extends all tax cuts except the top rate. He can either push it through or do nothing. He has no other choice. Dem senate and president vowed veto will not allow all bush tax cuts to be extended. They are dead for the top rate.

Either he passes it for all but the top or the house republicans will be blamed for not passing anything.

Boehener can't deliver that by himself. We all know this Cantor will eat him alive if he shows actual weakness.
