    Juan Nieves named Pitching Coach

    Pete Abraham ‏@PeteAbe
RT @JonHeymanCBS: #redsox expected to name Juan Nieves their new pitching coach. story up soon on http://cbssports.com
The Red Sox are expected to name Juan Nieves their new pitching coach, sources said.

Rick Peterson was seen as the favorite, but now indications are that Nieves is the first choice.

Nieves has been bullpen coach for the White Sox. Nieves, a former Brewers pitcher, once threw a no-hitter for Milwaukee.

The White Sox pitching staff has had a lot of success in recent years. Nieves is said to have had a seven-hour interview with the Red Sox.

Peterson, who has known new Red Sox manager John Farrell for 25 years, was seen as the logical pick. Boston may want to expand beyond its Cleveland connection to add new ideas.

I have to think that Peterson must have turned down the job, because this is out of nowhere. Everything before this has talked about how badly Farrell wanted Peterson.

John Farrell and the Red Sox have reportedly found their new pitching coach. The Sox are expected to announce Juan Nieves as the club’s newest pitching coach, according to CBSSports.com. The 47-year-old most recently served as the Chicago White Sox bullpen coach, as recently as this past season. Nieves has been with the White Sox since 2002, serving as a minor league pitching coach before working as the club’s bullpen coach. “We’re getting closer,” Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington said of the job search earlier this week. “We’re not quite there yet. But my hope is that we have something on that this week. We’ve started. We’ve identified some people we want to talk to about the hitting coach position. That’ll start this week, too. We’re moving along at a pretty good speed.” Nieves would be the fifth Red Sox pitching coach since 2010.

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. -- The Red Sox have selected White Sox bullpen coach Juan Nieves to become their next pitching coach.

Jon Heyman of CBS Sports had the new first. The news is a bit of a surprise given an ESPN report that Baltimore minor league pitching director Rick Peterson was the favorite.

The Red Sox also considered Marlins pitching coach Randy St. Claire and Royals executive Steve Foster, a former bullpen coach.

Nieves, 47, spent five years in Chicago working under respected pitching coach Don Cooper. He was a pitching coach in the White Sox system for the nine years prior to that. He also spent four years coaching in the Yankees organization.

Nieves graduated from Avon Old Farms in Connecticut before pitching parts of three seasons in the majors.

Why would he have interviewed if he turned down the job? Just shows the media is clueless, which is good.

Getting disappointed or excited over a pitching coach not named Duncan or Cooper is ridiculous.

Honestly, I like this. As a young bullpen coach Nieves must have been extremely impressive to win the job.

Rick has more experience than Juan. Looking at his resume on Wiki I'm pis*ed.

I'm actually now on board with this. Nieves worked with Cooper and must have learned quite a bit from him. I trust this was the correct decision.

Peterson is overrated.......he lucked out by having 3 young studs come up in Oakland......he didn't do anything special in NY....actually blamed for the poor performance of heath bell and the dumb zambrano kazmir trade

Preferred Peterson obviously, but I still like this. Nothing to get my panties in bunch in.
