They wanted Brewer + one of Gibson or Asik. When they were only being offered McRoberts + Indy's pick (meaning low 20s at best).
Clearly it's easy to say now why didn't we do that. But really why the hell didn't we? Taj and Asik are replaceable, especially with Thibs (he can develop other 1 way defensive minded bigs). Our FO fails to take risks, it's so frustrating. We could of had Mayo for a player we had no long term plans (Brewer) and a one way bench player. Such a joke![]()
Easy to say in hindsight. We had no way of knowing Asik would leave and he had pretty high potential, which he pretty much achieved. He became one of the best defensive bigs in the NBA. Plus, he and Taj both held higher value than Mayo at the time. Mayo hardly had a role on that team at that point. Brewer and a pick was better value than anything they'd get.
I said its easy to say now. Clearly our offer wasn't better then the Pacers to the only team that mattered. Also it seems like the Griz wanted a big in the deal. Mayo proved his first 2 years he's a starter in this league. This deal should of been made. You deal Taj and Brewer all day for Mayo in that situation JMO. Mayo should we can be a 18 to 20 PPG player. Your bench doesn't win championships your starters do. Anyone notice how starters play a lot more in the playoffs? Judging by how much GarPax now have invested in out bench they might understand this or maybe it was the hard cap that made them.

Why didn't we? Because the market for Mayo was ****ing McRoberts and a pick in the 20s. Brewer himself was almost a better package than McRoberts and the pick. Gibson alone was easily worth McRoberts & the pick. But, no... Memphis wanted BOTH Brewer, and one of Gibson or Asik. How in the world can you say we didn't take a risk there? Memphis was hustling the Bulls and we didn't fall for it, when they easily could've accepted Gibson for Mayo straight up and the Bulls' would've done so because like you said, we had both Gibson/Asik.
But no...... our FO is such a joke.![]()
OJ didn't have a significant role on that team though and that's the point. Taj and Asik were both key parts of our team at that point.
Our deal was clearly more beneficial to both sides, but Memphis's owner doesn't like JR for some reason and held that bias in a deal, which is indicated by taking a bad player and a worthless pick.
If you get Mayo you don't need Brewer so why hold him out of the deal, not only that but he was gone after the season. So why is he important?
I'm glad you think our offer had more value, but the Griz didn't. Unfortunately there opinion is more important then yours on this matter. Its also obvious that they wanted a big which Brewer isn't.
Hustled? this guy was a top 5 pick who averaged 18-20 ppg as a starter. He clearly just didn't fit in anymore with that team.![]()
It's not about what he means to us. It's about what he means to them. Mayo had no role on that team so the return value will be lower than one would think.
He would've definitely had a significant role with us, but unfortunately we were unable to get him. Having Mayo's play right now is a dream.
So you can't comprehend that the Memphis owner won't deal with us?
