It's depth. He's a guy that will probably back up Romine @ AAA and be called up if they need a backup catcher at the MLB level for a week. It's better than bringing up Romine, starting his arbitration clock, and burning an option for a short term injury.

I don't think so. in 2011 when Posey went down, Eli was the primary starter and Chris also played quite a bit...

At the beginning of 2012, Hector Sanchez won the backup role to Posey, Eli had Minor league options and was sent down. Stewart did not and was sent out of town. He would have been put through waivers if the Yanks had not picked him up in trade.

Eli may still have an option left. I am not sure at this point.

Perhaps. Either way, I don't get why fans get so worked up over depth moves. Every team in baseball has plenty of guys like this.

Actually, his arbitration clock has not moved far yet. That is based on service time, which is still only his time last Sept (assuming that he spent the season on the minor league DL, no the MLB DL). What has happened though is that his time on the 40 roster means that now when he is in the minors, it takes an option to put him there, and they only have so many options they can use. Sending him down this past season means he has one less option.
