Unlikely, but possible. Abraham still isn't signed, and our long term need at DT is still big, so we don't have to pick a DE. Pick a DT, and sign a DE.

Either way, Nink's snaps on the line have to be at least halved.
    #18 to DAL
    #23 to MIN
    #24 to IND
    #25 to MIN
    #28 to DEN

Those are the spots I see as potential landing spots for Williams. If OG/C Jonathan Copper is on the board I think DAL has to take him at #18. For MIN, I have a tough time seeing them passing on him twice. The only way I see it is if Sheldon Richardson somehow falls to #23 or maybe MIN even moves up for him. Then they go WR at #25. IND and DEN aren't the best fits, but it's possible.

Basically, if MIN moves up for Sheldon Richardson (reports have had them interested in moving up in the 1st) I think there's a chance he might be on the board at #29.

I do really like him but it makes me nervous of the WR spot. We HAVE to come away with a guy that can contribute right away. If you stay at #29 and take a DT, I think you probably have to move up to get a specific guy at WR. Can't risk not getting the one you want. And for us to move up for that guy would wipe our draft board clean since #91 is the only other pick of value.

And I really, really, really hope Jabaal Sheard fills the DE hole in a trade for #59 and honestly even a 4th next year if that's what it takes. I'd take him over any DE in this draft class except maybe Dion Jordan (I haven't done too much work on him since I pretty much just pegged him to JAX at #2 from the start so not too familiar with him). I think him and Jones would be an extremely disruptive duo and Ninko would be a great 3rd DE to rotate in behind them and even play some LB snaps to mix things up.

Dangit HPF, you're getting my hopes up. I'm suddenly pumped at the thought of us getting Sheard when its just from your speculation lol
Five rounds went by in the 2000 draft... After 198 other players had been chosen, the Patriots drafted him in the sixth round.
Owner Robert Kraft recalls the night he was leaving the old Foxboro Stadium when he saw "this skinny beanpole" carrying a pizza. "He comes up and says, 'Mr. Kraft, I'm Tom Brady.' I said, 'I know who you are, you're our sixth-round draft choice from Michigan.' "And he looked me right in the eye and he said, 'and I'm the best decision this organization has ever made.' "

Well rumors do have CLE making him available in trade talks because they don't like him in the 3-4 and when the Mallet rumors were hot they had us talking about getting one of CLE's defensive linemen in return. Throw in a lot of speculation surrounding us improving the DE position (draft rumors and the FA talk with Freeney/Abraham) and I like to think of it more as me connecting the dots than speculating.

Just to recap some of the later round guys of interest:

FS Micah Hyde - 5th or 6th round. Was a CB, projects to FS. Sure tackler, good ball instincts, program had bad record as a Sr, so they had less focus then expected. Played serveral sorts of defenses.
SS - Cooper Taylor (monster of 6'5" 228 that might project to coverage LB)
SS - Don Jones (tests out well, projects as a ST and back end DB back-up)
DT - DT Kapron Lewis-Moore - has a torn ACL, so he's a PUP guy. Played 5 tech DE, projects to be a 3 tech D

C - Dalton Freeman, 7th rounder, can play G, he's fast as heck, needs to bulk up, a year 2 surprise sort of kid
G - Bailey - 5th rounder, this guy I promise would be a monster in NE with a couple of years of coaching. LG starter in 2015 sort of monster. He's a Jr. too.
RB - Latavius Murray. Ignored until he ran a 4.38, very good at 6' 2.5" 223 lbs. Might go as high as high 5th round. Too bad he was a UDFA a month ago.
FB - Kyler Reed; enough moves to be seen as a HB or TE. 7th rounder.
WR - Mark Harrison - a huge fast guy that's raw, liked this guy for months, probably 6th or later
WR - Brice Butler - another raw kid with lots of talent. Likely ST guy for at least a few years. 7th round or later.

^ Add in Luke Tasker, WR Cornell, to that list as a possible 7th rounder but most likely UDFA. I'm not just saying this because I go to Cornell either (many NFL teams have been in to scout him). He's a perfect Patriot player.

Also look at JC Tretter, G. He went to the Combine and Senior Bowl. He's very athletic, smart, and versatile and can play T, G, or C.

Greg Bedard of the Boston Globe reports that “multiple teams” have reached out to the Patriots regarding a possible trade for backup quarterback Ryan Mallett. Bedard’s sources added that the odds are “slightly stronger” that Mallett is traded than back with the Patriots next season. New England has reportedly been “heavily scouting” quarterbacks in recent weeks

Trade Mallett and draft Barkley to sit behind Brady like Rodgers did with Favre = franchise future set.

I'm a bit of a homer when it comes to Barkley. I know you guys don't have the most favorable opinion when it comes to him though

Taking a gamble on Bray Renfree, or Glennon to be ready for 2015 or 2016 is one way to go. Another is to wait until next year and draft a less risky and more expensive kid (pick wise), and bring in a few journeyman types to hold the job for a year or two.

If Barkley is there at #102 I'd consider it. But trading Mallet doesn't make sense if you use a high pick (2nd-3rd) on a different backup.

I called Barkley's demise before his SR season (Homestarrunner and I were like the only ones that thought he was vastly overrated). His footwork falls apart when his first read isn't a legitimate option, and he doesn't go through his reads well when he is under pressure. He also has the tendency to throw off of his back-foot, so the ball floats and thus he throws picks. I've watched a lot of his games, and I just don't see him being a starting QB in this league. His physical tools aren't that impressive either.
