E-Rod might get a look at Tight End

Kellen Davis' struggles were evident from the start of the Bears' loss to the Texans on Sunday night, when he lost a fumble on the first offensive play after catching a pass and taking a hit from ex-Bear Danieal Manning.

Two weeks ago, coach Lovie Smith praised Davis for his performance against the Panthers. Monday, Smith couldn't sugarcoat his tight end's play. Davis was targeted five times and had only one catch the one he fumbled. He had at least two drops.

"It's pretty hard for guys to play at a certain level each week,'' Smith said. "(Sunday) night, he'll say it wasn't his best game. It's as simple as that. He'll come back this week."

Whether Davis rebounds or not, the Bears are expected to give rookie fullback Evan Rodriguez reps at tight end this week as they search for consistency at the position. Rodriguez opened eyes in training camp with his receiving ability and had three catches for 49 yards in exhibition play. He missed two regular-season games with a sprained MCL and hasn't caught a pass.

Rodriguez was drafted as a tight end. The fourth-round pick from Temple caught 69 passes for 871 yards and seven touchdowns in three seasons with the Owls.

This is a good thing. I hope Rodriguez excels in the position, he's done everything else well up to this point. The Bears' TE routes probably aren't rocket science either, we've barely used it the past 2 years other than the red zone.

Otherwise, it would be a complete waste to use a 4th round pick on a FB.

In TC and pre season he looked great on the catch and run. They were throwing the same exact routes they do to kellen.. Except Erod caught and would turn and run for another 20 yards.

He is REALLY good at putting his uniform on properly. Can't deny that.

Kellen Davis is the best tight end on paper..
Except for stats, accomplishments, grading, blocking, agility, catching and route running.

This is good news if at all true.

The TE definitely seems to be open at times in this offense, so ERod, if he's given a legitimate shot here, could do some damage.
