Seven Mets became free agents today

    http://metsblog.com/metsblog/seven-m...-agents-today/
Scott Hairston, Jon Rauch, Ramon Ramirez, Ronny Cedeno, Kelly Shoppach, Tim Byrdak and Chris Young all became free agents today, and are free to negotiate with other teams.

Mike Puma of the New York Post says the Mets still would like to retain Hairston, but the raise and probability he will command a multi-year deal makes his return unlikely.

Sandy Alderson said in July he decided not to trade Hairston at the trade deadline because he had more value to the Mets on the team than he did for the quality of prospects he could have acquired in return.

Hairston was then placed on trade waivers in August, and while he was claimed, the Mets did not make a deal.
Good thing they kept Hairston on the team, it paid dividends.

Ideal scenario: Retain both Hairston and Shoppach

Too bad the Mets aren't in the business of multi year deals this offseason.

Although to be honest depending on what Hairston gets in FA, he might not be worth keeping anyway.

Shoppach on the other hand, wasn't very impressive but i would only bring him back to backup a real starting catcher that wasn't Josh Thole.

Identical to the Reyes situation, but just not the same quality of player of course and we get no compensation for letting Hairston go.

Agreed. We could have gotten something for him for sure

Alderson has been terrible he didnt even get us Zack Wheeler.

It was desperate Sabean who threw himself at Beltran for a chance to repeat.

As GM, Alderson has done NOTHING.

Yeah it's a shame that won't happen. I wouldn't mind keeping Cedeno or Rauch for cheap one year deals.

We could have had a Dock Doyle type of player for him.

    Damn Sandy.

It is completely pathetic that they won't entertain even a 2 year deal for Hairston. What a joke this team continues to be. IMO it's just another excuse to not to spend any money. Whatever it takes to do anything, the Mets position themselves below that level.

They must think we are stupid. We know what you're doing Frandy.

I'm actually pretty excited to see how bad of a team they put together. I imagine someone like Jeremy Reed will be starting in the outfield for us.

It would not bother me if they won 50 games and att. fell thru the floor. That's what the Coupons and their enablers Bud and Spindy deserve.

It's disgusting what is going on here.

A NY team can't afford to resign Scott ******** Hairston???

That's just BS and totally unacceptable. And people think this team is going to spend and win in 2014 just because two deals are coming off...

    Ok.

Actually he could of gotten much better than that, if you trust your scouts you could find hidden gems in the lower minors, but to keep him for the single fact that he would help the Mets win 1 or 2 more games was pretty idiotic, specially considering that a higher pick would of been better for the Mets since the idea is to build through the draft right?

My sister flew over NY a few days ago and said from the plane she could see Citi Field was covered by water and you couldn't see the actual baseball field itself.

    Seemed so fitting.
