This sounds like a reasonably good idea for the twins. However, Pavano is likely going to hold out hoping someone will sign him to a ML deal thinking he will be a a serviceable starter again post injury.

Maybe Span for Marte/Hanson and McPherson?

A future infield including Sano, Hanson, Rosario would be VERY exciting. However if it were Marte, that would allow us to perhaps move Willingham for a young pitcher as well.
McPherson looks like a #3 type of starter, he can miss some bats and pitched well in some time at the show late last season including 3 starts. He had a 2.73 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, 21K, 7BB in 26 innings... He isn't flashy like Delgado or some of the other names mentioned in Span rumors are, but he would upgrade our staff, and if we are getting Hanson or Marte as a centerpiece might be worth it.
With all due respect why in the world would the Pittsburg do that?
Marte has a huge cieling and likely will outproduce Span at a cheaper price, let alone add a good pitching price. I do believe we are overvalueing Span. I like him a lot but Willie Mays he ain't.

I know we have made some moves but one that I think is out there that could be a very good "value" is Edwin Jackson. Good strike out ratio with some experience and top of the rotation stuff even though it doesn't always go that way. Projected at a 10 mil pricetag. Mr. Ryan go get him and it would be a successful offseason for turning the staff around.

I believe that Alex Meyer will win the 5th spot in the rotation as he is going to be 23 and has collage experience and the stuff to compete. Given those changes we would look like this.

Jackson, Diamond, Correa, Gibson and Meyer. I do believe that would be a big upgrade and we should be close to 500 and with a few breaks be in the race most of the summer.

Meyer has only pitched as high as class A. He needs at least one more year in the minors. Also I really doubt we'll get Jackson. Ryan is looking for another mediocre veteran starter who will cost less. Marcum would be the best case scenario, but I doubt we'll get him either.

Worley would slot in right after Jackson. He's not really a #2, but in the Twins' rotation he's the 2nd best guy.

which reminds me...I know of a number of reasons, but I never heard an official reason why Scott Baker is no longer a Twin

Despite missing the entire season, was he just pricing himself out of the Twins plan?
I know they made him an offer (or talked numbers) and I know they weren't likely going to offer what he ended up getting from the Cubs......but he'd certainly slot in towards the top of the Twins' rotation were he still here.

He was overpaid for sure, but after seeing the Correia signing, Baker probably would have been a better value.

The Phillies signed John Lannen for one year at $2.5 million with $2.5 million in incentives. He's basically a younger clone of Correia so no great loss, but he possibly got half the money and half the years. Some GM's are just better at this free agency game than others.

According to Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com, the Pirates are among the teams "checking in" on Aaron Harang and Chris Capuano.
The Dodgers are looking to deal from their starting pitching now that they've signed Zack Greinke and Hyun-Jin Ryu, and could save $7 million in payroll by moving Harang. However, both Ted Lilly (shoulder) and Chad Billingsley (elbow) are injury concerns going into next season, so they'll likely need something of value in return. In addition to the Pirates, Morosi lists the Mariners, Twins, Blue Jays, and Indians as possible trade partners.
I think Harrang would fit our mold and would be a solid but not spectacular addition.

I know we don't spend in Free agency but I really do think we could be fairly competative with that rotation.

I'm not really to gung-ho about trading for a backend of the rotation arm during a rebuilding period especially when there is money to spend. They might as well get a comparable free agent and not give up any players.

I'd be disappointed if the Twins didn't check in on Webb. All it costs is a plane ticket and hotel room for the team's scouts. I'd think if all teams offers to Webb were similar, the Twins may be high on his list as there'd be less resistance to him making the rotstion.
