The rule must change to prevent the opposing team from sabotaging the game by intentionally faulting players they cannot defend. If the faulted player is a pour free throw shooter the teams that gets the free throws are disadvantaged. I looked at this issue for years and it is shame to make a strategy from sabotaging instead of trying to defend.
The awarded free throws must be executed by a player designated by the coach and not by faulted player. This is the way soccer does it and I think it is more fair.
WTF... comparing soccer pk rules to nba ft attempts. Not the same at all. Hack-a-Shaq is used as a strategy (a good one) to force the team to lose possessions, but risk 2 pts. No one gives away penalty shots on purpose.
These guys get paid millions and can't even learn to make a couple of FT shots? Sorry learn to shoot.
