    Trade Deadline

Most teams as deep and talented as us do not typically talk trades as the trade deadline.... you do not want to mess up team chemistry or mess with a good thing.

The few chinks in our armor has been the lack of depth at our defensive line and our lack of depth at outside linebacker. It really showed last night against the cardinals. When our pass rushers got tired, we had NOBODY who could put pressure on the quarterback. Granted most teams do not have long drives against our defense and our run game helps keep our defense off the field to rest. But come playoffs or injuries, I think this weakness could be exploited.

With that being said, I think we have a number of valuable trade assets we could use to bring in a top flight outside linebacker for depth or some first round picks in the draft.

1). Kapernick. I like him alot and I think he has great potential, but I think Smith is a better fit for our offense. One thing that people do not understand about Smith is how many audibles he is responsible for at the line of scrimmage. Passing plays and running plays, Smith reads the defense and has been a big part of why our running game has been so dominant. He has the respect of his teammates. The games where Kapernick comes in has been Smith's worse games, and I feel it is because it takes him out of rhythm. I think the coaching staff recognized that as well and did not use Kapernick last night. I also am a big fan of our 3rd string quarterback and would be fine with him being our backup. So I just personally feel Kapernick would provide better value as a trade piece.

    2) LaMichael James. We have TWO top teir running backs that we are not using at all. James is a nice talent, but the combination of Hunter and Gore is great... and that combo will last at least 2 more years. Maybe next year it becomes more of a 50/50 to keep Gore fresh. But I do not see any need for James for at least two years. Ginn and Williams have been solid in the return game. And with so many teams in need of a running back right now, I think we would get great value for him.

So just my thoughts. Not saying I dislike either player. I think they are both going to be great players in this league. Winning a super bowl is tough though, and we need a better pass rush in my opinion to win it this year. Packers, Falcons, Giants... all have great quarterbacks with great passing games. We have a great defense, but need to apply more pressure on the quarterback consistently. Our starters are pretty good at doing so, but our backups are not. So wouldn't mind getting one more piece or two to add to our rotation at the cost of players we are not using at all this year, and who argueably may not be needed next year as well.

Nothing will happen, but I do agree with the LaMichael James suggestion. He is our most expendable piece this early in his career and with our current RB situation.

In regards to Kaepernick, not sure it's a good idea to get rid of our backup QB, especially when he's actively contributing as a playmaker off the bench.

The problem with James however, is that he won't net much since he's yet to see the playing field.

I can't imagine they haven't dangled him out there. It's not like he's making big bucks and a team like GB really needs that. Although, the Niners may also look at a team like GB and say there is no way we're gonna give them the missing link. Plus, I still think he could be huge late in the year. Gore always gets a little banged up like just about any running back and having Jacobs be able to come in late in the season fresh could be huge. Especially in a game like NE late in the year or if they have to go to NY or Chicago in the playoffs.

They won't get by Miami and they'll be lucky if they can beat Boston. So since you're so high on Rose, I don't see him doing any damage at all come playoff time.

Kaepernick and James aren't going anywhere. Possibly Jacobs, but even that seems unlikely. This isn't the NBA or MLB where a ton of trades go down. The NFL is usually relatively quiet on trades this time of year. The main reason for this is that players take time to learn a system so a mid-season acquisition doesn't really help you much until next year so why not wait to make the moves until the offseason? Don't expect much, if anything, to happen.

I wouldn't mind that at all. I just don't know who they would keep inactive in his place.

The only player that they could even consider not activating in place of Jacobs is Celek. All the other players that would be mentioned by fans as considerations for this contribute on special teams. I don't know what the point of activating Jacobs would be. Frank Gore is just as effective, if not more, than Jacobs on short yardage situations. Other than those carries, what does Jacobs bring to the table that we don't get from Gore, Hunter, and Dixon? I think he is nothing more than injury insurance at this point.

Good point about it taking a few weeks for a player to get caught up with the playbook, so making a trade would only make sense as a long term option and not really shore up anything short term.

I was thinking more along the lines of a team that is desperate might over pay for a player in mid season. Kind of like what the Raiders did for Carson Palmer last year. We are one of the few teams with quality depth in the NFL, so I thought we might be in a good position to move some of a depth for some help at outside linebacker or draft picks... then this years draft we would be completely loaded with picks.

At this point I think you're right. I don't think that's why he was brought it. Although, the media and fan perception of "short yardage" back was not entirely accurate. He's been a "twinkle toes" kind of runner for the last few yrs so I think he was brought it in as more of a "share the load" kind of guy with Gore and Hunter. The current recipe is working now so why change it.

Speaking of Celek though...he didn't help his cause for the 46 with a holding call yesterday.

I can't see either of the guys mentioned by the OP getting moved. They are both part of this franchise's future.
