It may look like all bad news but there is a positive side and it is that this SHOULD end all this crazy speculation be it real or imagined that the Pirates are going to non-tender Karstens. It is rather obvious he is a bargain.

I actually think there is ample reason to be highly disappointed with attendance last season. The most important series in PNC Park history drew only 53,590 fans and there is no manipulation there it was the August 27-29 series against the Cardinals. The Pirates were still well above .500 and all 3 of the games were night games so a day game didn't drag that number down.

Now again outside of possibly the All Star Game and the first game in stadium history these were the most important games ever played in the ballpark and they averaged a scant 17,863. That is far from what I thought people meant when they said people would come out to support them if they were winning and it is far from what they need to be anything more than a small market team with a very tight budget.

Sanchez, Irwin and Black were added as expected. The Pirates also added Cabrera as a 4th which isn't a total surprise and they added Hunter Strickland as a 5th. I mentioned him as a long shot but didn't expect him to actually be added but that is the Pirates way.

Still a little uncertainty on whether Ngoepe is eligible. If he is he stands a decent chance if being selected but other than him only Nathan Baker and Kyle Kaminska seem like realistic possibilities to be selected.

Ngoepe is not eligible. So the only names of note left unprotected are Kaminska, Inman and Baker.

Shoppach has a huge K problem which makes him far from an ideal addition but there is reason to believe that his offense wouldn't be hugely worse than AJ and would be far better than what we got from Barajas this season.

Still for the right price an all AJ battery on opening day would be great.
I think I am spot on with Shoppach's offensive ability or in this case, lack thereof. The last three seasons has brought him a .202/.294/.371 batting line while averaging 80 K to just 18 BB. He is really pretty damn terrible with the bat. And no way I see AJ getting 2/$18 million

Would you trust a blind scout? Of course you wouldn't but that's what you do when you simply go by stats

I never suggested 2/18 did I? My thought process was more of long the lines that Shoppach might get 1/3 and AJ might get 2/15. Still if you think he can be had for something like 1/6 or 2/12 even then this discussion is probably fairly irrelevent. My preference at the catcher position remains attempting to find a way to acquire Conger from the Angels but I'm open to other sokutions as well.

Just for fun I took Bill James projections for the hitters and put them into a lineuop analyzer. For sake of simplicty I put Jones as the 1B starter and gave the pitchers the batting line of the 2012 NL average for pitchers. Here is the best lineup using the model of the pitcher batting 9th.

    McCutchen
    Snider
    Walker
    Marte
    Alvarez
    Barmes
    McKenry
    Jones
    Pitcher

That lineup with Bill James predicitions gives us 4.503 runs per game. A more traditional lineup of Marte, Walker, Cutch, Alvarez, Jones, Snider, McKenry, Barmes, Pitcher would give us 4.441 runs per game.

In addition to Felix Pie the Pirates signed 5 others to minor league contracts. None seem all that interesting so I won't go into more detail but if you want some info Pirates Prospects has some for you.

No, you suggested 2/$16 million. My bad but that's not happening either. I think Conger is a way to go as well. Bryan Anderson was just signed by the White Sox. He would have been worth taking a flier on.

Next important date on the offseason schedule is Friday the 30th. That is the deadline to tender offers to arb eligible players. Pirates have a few but only Morton, Resop and I suppose Karstens are in question.
