How about Liriano as a bounce-back candidate?

I don't see anyone giving him a 3 year deal.

2 years is probably the longest he should get since he's 37.
    Thanks, Timmy!

Doubt he's willing to sign a MiLC. I see the Giants looking for starting pitching depth from the minor league free agent list or off the scrap heap.

I would argue Scutaro would be worth 2/18 to be honest. Each of the last 5 seasons he put up production worth more, or worth a lot more, than 9 mil. He has shown remarkable consistency and he has shown to be very durable playing 144+ games 4 of the last 5 years. If we factor in a gradual decline in his age 37 and 38 seasons he should have no problem living up to that contract.

There is also the issue that without any even remotely attractive alternatives to the position, the Giants should be getting well worth their money by having him at the position instead of having to trot out below replacement level talent.

How has Scutaro shown to be worth a lot more than $9 million annually over the past five years? (Please don't try and say 1 WAR=$5 million)

An on average 3 win middle infielder each of the last 5 years is worth 9 mil anyway you slice it.

That value sits right between Rickie Weeks who makes 9.5 mil a year and Howie Kendrick who makes roughly 8.5 mil a year. So....9 mil.

How has a second baseman/shortstop who plays good defense and has posted a .350 OBP over that span not worth 9 mil from 2008-2012? It's a not even a question.

When factoring in some decline in his late 30 seasons, but also factoring in the absolute black hole at second base behind him, 9 mil a year is what I would offer him if it came to that or him walking.

2/14 seems like a more fair deal, but I'm not going to cry over 2/18. I'm OK with paying him that if we had to.

Weeks also wasn't a free agent at the time either, and in a pathetic second base class. Weeks didn't have the leverage when negotiating that deal that Scutaro has.

If Weeks was a free agent right now he'd get more than 9.5. It's probably not an accurate reflection of what Weeks would command on the open market, it's likely low.

I'm not saying Scutaro is better or I'd rather have him, but it's definitely not hard to imagine he's worth 9 mil. Will he get that much? I'm not sure, but it wouldn't surprise me.

Thank god it wasn't another 1 WAR=$5 million "argument" and instead something well thought out. Don't think I could take another one of those ignorant comments. Not saying rcs15 makes those type of arguments but many on the site do. 2 yrs/$14 million would be as high as I would go. He will be getting a raise for most likely declined performance.

I'd rather overpay Scutaro than Pagan. After Scutaro there aren't any good FA options at 2B and our system has nothing. Blanco is a perfectly fine replacement for Pagan however.

I hope Scutaro stays, but I am tired of the trend of veteran players Sabean brings in, winning or not.

B-craw to me is good but upgradable, and Freddie Sanchez, yea...

Seems like our SS/2B is always plagued with over the hill players, even if they do come in clutch when it matters most.
