Mets retain Wally Backman as manager of their Triple-A affiliate

    http://www.nj.com/mets/index.ssf/201...kman_as_m.html
Wally Backman will remain in the Mets organization as the manager of their new Triple-A affiliate, the Las Vegas 51s, general manager Sandy Alderson said this afternoon.

Backman, 53, has managed in the teamís minor-league system for the past three seasons. He was one of the four finalists for the major-league managerial job in 2010, a position awarded to Terry Collins. Collins has yet to receive a contract extension past 2013.

The team retained its entire coaching staff for this coming season, despite an 88-loss campaign in 2012. Backman had passed over an offer to assist on his former manager Davey Johnsonís staff in Washington this season.

The Metsí brain trust visited the new complex in Las Vegas on Thursday. The team signed a two-year agreement with the 51s of the Pacific Coast League in September. They had spent the previous four seasons with Buffalo in the International League. Team officials have considered playing an exhibition in Las Vegas before the 2013 season begins.

Wally in Vegas right before he is likely to get his big shot.

    Seems like a cruel test.

My good friend in Boston told me that the Red Sox were very, very impressed with both Tim Wallach and Brad Ausmus when they interviewed for the Red Sox job.

With the success of Mike Matheny, Don Mattingly and Robin Ventura, the Mets, if they let Collins go after this year, should consider Wallach or Ausmus.

That said, if Backman agreed to go to Las Vegas instead of hooking up with Davey Johnson, it might mean that the Mets promised him the Met job if and when Collins is let go.

I am not enthused or have negative feelings about Backman as a manager, but if and when Collins is let go, I think that the Mets should explore every option. I just don't know if Backman should be the ultimate choice.

It would make a great reality show watching him struggle with his dream and what he craves.

I wonder when we'll hear about the pitching coaches.
Scarecrow: I haven't got a brain... only straw.
Dorothy: How can you talk if you haven't got a brain?
Scarecrow: I don't know... But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking... don't they?
Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.
