Hmm I like most of the players brought in but:

Don't think Neise will come so cheap. Vitters would have no place there, and Lake as one of the top three pieces in a deal for a good pitcher is hard to imagine.

I want to avoid Delmon Young like the plague unless he's extremely cheap. One of my least favorite players and prospects everz.

Three FAs, one Delmon Young and another a reliever, is going to be a little light.

Cubs fans always seem to talk about how the Cards get these guys to produce out of nowhere, but those guys have been brought into a winning, competitive, successful environment. That does have a positive effect on the mindset of a player, especially a young player. Not only that, but being a winning team getting success out of individuals who unexpectedly produce means success can keep happening.

Obviously this is about starting pitching.

That's right, he mentions how the OF had multiple stars this year, including a stud in Cespedes. Crazy that you're allowed to have two.

On whether to trust Cespedes coming into the season:

Why do I pick this? Well I happen to be a fan of promoting BJ Upton here. If it's not known to whoever - Upton is a former elite amateur talent who went #2 overall in the draft. He grew up with two studs in Justin Upton and David Wright as teammates. Matt Garza, a former teammate of Upton, came over and improved off of his already solid track record with the Rays. It's not just how much WAR a guy put up lately (lately being the previous season before FA) and his batting average. It's using every piece of information you can get, and it is out there if you want it.

Or as Beane puts it in reference to Reddick moving forward:

    Platoon talk:

    Crowd/Fans:

Wait wait wait...It's not lowering ticket prices? ****!
I'm jealous that the A's had maybe the best defensive corner outfielders in baseball. Both Cespedes and Reddick have cannons. They're going to be an entire outfield version of "Death to Flying Things" next season with Young in center. UZR didn't care for Cespedes but his DRS in left field was above average. It's pretty reasonable to expect him to improve next year.

**** no to Delmon Young unless we're buying really low on him or if the NL's adding a DH.

    I mean, seriously:

There's no way Theo Epstein is going to allow Delmon Young anywhere near this team at a time when he's trying to preach patience and controlling the strike zone so I wouldn't worry about it. They wouldn't go after a left fielder who is worse than Alfonso Soriano at everything on the field or off.

Oh ****. That's wild. Took me a minute. I thought you reposted the bit about Cardenas, Socolvich, Berken and Mateo.

Ten gone and Gutierrez replaced Recker.

Not counting those recently outrighted or on the DL, the 40-man should look something like the below, which would be 33.

EDIT: Confirmed at 33. Carrie Muskat and Bruce Miles:

With recent moves, addition of RHP Gutierrez, #Cubs 40-man roster now at 33. Plenty of room

Corpas had a minor league option remaining, but because he had already accrued at least five years of MLB Service Time, I believe he had to give his consent before being sent to Iowa.
