Developer Bruce Ratner has scored a major goal by landing the Islanders ice hockey team for his Barclay's arena in downtown Brooklyn, sources said.
The announcement was expected at a press conference this afternoon with Ratner, Mayor Bloomberg, Islanders owner Charles Wang, National Hockey League Commissioner Gary Bettman and Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz.
Barclay's is already the home field of the Nets basketball team and its CEO, Brett Yornark will be attending the press conference as well.
Ratner had said earlier that he was "trying like hell" to lure the Islanders to Brooklyn from Long Island and called a planned exhibition game against the Devils, which was canceled due to the NHL lockout, an audition for the city's newest arena.
Apparently the arena can only seat 14,500 for NHL games which would make it the smallest NHL arena in the game (Winnipeg is the current smallest at 14,930 or somewhere in that ball park).
While the current situation is no cake walk, I do not see how such a small facility seat wise can produce a better revenue for the franchise than it is now. Fewer seats usually means inflated prices and quite frankly, the Isles don't have a team (right now) that can put those people in those seats for that amount of money.
I think it is great that they are moving on from Nassau but I don't really see how this is something of an improvement for the current financial state of the franchise itself
Still think they should move the Isles out of NY and over to the West Coast. Now you'll have 3 franchise within 15 miles of each other taking revenue from one another.
It won't matter, Ranger fans are Rangers fans, Devils fans are Devils fans, and Islander fans are Islander fans.
It doesn't affect attendance with the Rangers and Devils being 7 miles away from each other, (or one stop on the NJ Transit line) i dont think it will matter much here.
All it does is open the Islanders up to different fans in Brooklyn, maybe lose some of their fans on the island (but the Island hasn't been kind to the Islanders for quite some time anyway because the team has sucked besides the die harders)
