Sigh...it will be a very slow offseason knowing that the 2014 imposed budget is there.

No Hamilton - Thank God. He would be a big mistake.
No Upton (x2) - Thankfully... Overrated.
Haren - No thanks. I like Phelps and Nova instead.

Although its nice throwing out trades like that, I dont see it happening as long as A-Rods albatross contract is on the books.

    What I see:
    1. Kuroda takes the qualifying offer. (Yeah!!!)
    2. Swisher and Soriano declines Q offer. (Yeah!!!)
    3. Try to get Soria but KC resigns him. (awww).
    4. Laugh at the Dodgers when they sign Hamilton to a 6 yr contract.
    5. Turn around and offer A-Rod and Cano or Granderson with prospect to the Dodgers for Crawford and prospect. Or A-rod and Cano to Miami for Reyes. Please Lord help us rid the books of A-Rod....
    6. Sign Hughes to an extension (so you can dangle him if needed).
    7. Continue to pester Andy to come back....in July is fine.
    8. Resign Ibanez and Itchy.
    9. Resign Martin.
    10. Tell the kids in the minors they need to step up and be ready to play. If every other MLB team can try out their minor league players, can the Yanks do the same?

yuk this is what will happen
    1. Kuroda either accepts the qualifying offer or goes to Japan
    2. Swisher and Soriano declines qualifying offers
    3. Yankees go after Soria hard ending with him signing a 1-2 yr deal here
    4. Yankees trade for a RF
    5. Pettite Retires or comes back in July
    6. Martin is resigned to a 2-3 yr deal
    7. Williams and Sanchez have big years in the minors
    8. New bench players are signed(Polanco,Sizemore, etc)

I love that Soria would be fine with setting up Mo, let him gain confidence and get his stuff back and he could potentially be our future closer

You don't want Hamilton, who can hit over 50-homeruns in YS, but you want to trade Cano for Reyes ....

50 home runs? More like 50 lines.

Cano for Reyes is silly though.

In fairness, I believe he was suggesting A-Rod and Cano for Reyes as a salary dump - not a straight Cano for Reyes swap. Still, it doesn't work well.

We would shed 119M of salary (A-Rod) but we'd pick up about 96M (Reyes) for a player that has no position until Jeter retires, so it doesn't make much sense. Throw in losing Cano for a year and it makes even less sense.

AROD and Granderson for Reyes and a prospect makes more sense, since we know that we would prefer to have Cano over Granderson. Then Reyes plays 3B until Jeter retires or tries LF with Gardner moving to CF.

    Arod
    Nova
    Phelps
    Another spec

    For

    Reyes

Would make more sense for Miami.

Here's my issue with all these trades. The idea that we're gaining.

I'm not sure anyone takes all of ARod's contract, regardless of what else they're given. But let's pretend for a second they do.

To start with we've trade ARod's production for a guy who basically offers the same overall offensive value. And it's not as though Reyes has been super healthy. He's missed reasonable time in 3 out of the last 4 seasons. You could argue defense, but ARod isnt terrible in the field, and you're now moving a SS to a position he's never played. And then you look at money. And Reyes isn't cheap. 2013 is his last cheap season and then he makes 16 million, and then over 20 for the rest of his contract.

So you probably save 30 million overall. But now you need to take that savings and use it to replace the cheap, young pitching you traded away.

All these trade ARod scenarios are the same few ideas.

Trade him and eat most of his contract. And then turn around and use the savings to sign a mediocre 3rd bsaeman.

Trade his bad contract for another bad contract. We're still stuck with a bad contract.

Trade him + a handful of dudes to get a team to take most of his contract. But then you leave holes to be filled.

I'm just not sure how trading ARod really makes sense for NY.

First off, thank you Slick for pointing out it wasnt a straight Cano for Reyes...its all about dumping A-Rod.

And the addition of Granderson or Cano is to get rid of A-Rod, you have to add bait. So, sorry but one or more needs to go.

Plus, with either Granderson or Cano gone, thats a pending big contract not to give out in 2014. Killing two birds with one dropped bag of A-Rod.

Although i dont mind adding Nova but i dont want Nova and Phelps included. We have to keep one. If we are pushing Granderson, add Adams since you know once the trade goes through, you extend Cano so second base is secured.

If adding Cano instead of Grandy, then Nova or a prospect is enough depending on what you get back.

    Meet the fiscal goal? Yes.
    Rid of A-Rod? Hell yes.
Become flexible in signing players? Ohhhh yeah.

Then players like Bourn become an option now.

    Still HELL NO TO HAMILTON.....
