The contract was still a sound investment, and I can find guys who should be gone before Brees. Smith, Shanle, Ellis and Jenkins equaled a $15,567,666 cap hit this season. Brees had a cap hit of $10,400,000 for this season. Also, in 2013, Brees' cap hit is $17,400,000, and Smith's is $14,541,666. I know you don't like a player earning that much, but I think Brees is far more deserving than others.

Reid would just use that formula. Even with good RBs like Westbrook, McCoy and Brown, Reid would rather let them rot in the backfield.

If Payton goes, the Saints would need a good offensive-minded coach to work with Brees and reign him in. I have no idea who that would be.
