I'd rather spend any money we have on draft picks and international YOUNG signings (remember we signed Jose Reyes young a decade ago). No need for moves like these. They'd be terrible for our situation.

What do you guys think? Would you be opposed to signings like this? Now we most likely wont spend this type of money in the off-season, but if we did woudl you approve?

That too of course. But right now we need to be rebuilding from the ground up, so we need to spend any potential money in getting the guys that will be at a high level and with us for a LONG TIME.

If a guy is at or near 30, he shouldn't be signed. We need to be thinking for 3-4 years from now, not "plug-ins" for next year. I'll pass on Bourn and Valverde.

Of course all things change should the Wilpons decide to spend money. If the Wilpons were serious about getting us to be contenders, they'd go after Josh Hamilton, trade for Joe Mauer, and try to trade for Feliz Hernandez. ONLY THEN would re-signing Wright, and signing a Bourn and Valverde make sense. If not, then I say rebuild.

You can rebuild and be competitive at the same time, it doesn't have to be one or the other. We will see significant spending next off-season and beyond due to Johan and Bay coming off the books.

Signing Bourn and Valverde makes absolutely no sense for the Mets in whatever situation they are in. Valverde is nothing special and Bourn will get vastly overpaid for performance that will not be sustained long term.

That's true ONLY IF the owners are willing to spend. The Wilpons are squeezing the nickel til the buffalo farts.

The owners (the Wilpons) are only going to spend money sufficient enough to get "plug-in" players (Kelly Shoppach, Andres Torres, Scott Hairston, etc) to keep us away from 5th place. They're not going to spend money on re-building. It's their safest way to assure some sort of profit. Any significant spending is a risk for them at the moment.

That's why for us at the moment, it's either play it the Kansas City Royals/Pittsburgh Pirates style (sign cheap mediocre plug-ins) or it's rebuild from the beginning from the ground up (like what I want to do).

I want to rebuild, NOT stay at 4th place while the Wilpons get safe profits while hoping for an overachieving miracle.

Has he not been paying attention to the Mets financially the last 3 years at all?

The Mets have made it abundantly clear the last 2 offseasons big time FA spending is not in their agenda, neither will it again this offseason with the team still losing money.

Both those moves would be incredibly stupid anyway, Valverde has been shaky all season and they've removed him as closer for the playoffs (not to mention the Mets are paying FF 6 million to close, why would they bring in someone else?) and the Mets would have to be foolish to give Bourn that type of money.

Besides being a great fielder, he is limited at the plate aside from his speed which will only continue to regress as he gets older. That's not worth 5yrs/80+ million dollars.

He also has K-Rod going to the Yankees for 1yr/7 million, Larouche getting 3 yrs/33 million (when the Nationals will definitely pick up his option for next year), and the Braves getting Hamilton at 5yrs/120 million.

It's a mutual option. He will decline and enter a weak FA 1st baseman market.

The Nationals can move Morse to 1B, move Werth to LF, Harper to RF, and go after one of the FA CF available.
