ALDS - The Revenge: Tigers vs A's (Oct 6-11*)

In the 2006 ALCS, they swept us. That was our last taste of the playoffs...until now. We've had six years to think about it, now it's time for some payback.

    vs

    Game 1
    Saturday, Oct 6

    _________
    Jarrod Parker__________Justin Verlander

    181.1 ___ IP___ 238.1
    3.43 ___ FIP___ 2.94
    6.95 ___K/9___ 9.03
    3.13 __BB/9__ 2.27
    0.55 __HR/9__ 0.72

A's: Parker is the first A's rookie in team history to start Game 1 of a postseason series. Yet this rookie boasts the stuff and poise of a veteran, having tossed at least six innings in 22 of his 29 starts while allowing two runs or fewer 17 times.
Other guys: After a season in which some thought Max Scherzer was the scarier pitcher, Verlander has reprised the ace role he fit so well last year. Unlike last October, weather shouldn't trip up Verlander, allowing to him Game 1 and a potential Game 5.

    Game 2
    Sunday, Oct 7

    _________
    Tommy Milone__________Doug Fister

    190.0 ___ IP___ 161.2
    3.93 ___ FIP___ 3.42
    6.49 ___K/9___ 7.63
    1.71 __BB/9__ 2.06
    1.14 __HR/9__ 0.84

A's: Milone, always calm and cool under pressure, finished the season by going 2-0 with a 2.60 ERA, despite a .339 opponents' average, over his final five starts. This marks the 25-year-old's first postseason appearance.
Other guys: Fister hopes to continue his hot streak since the All-Star break, posting the third-best ERA (2.67) among starters and tying for the third in wins (8). He last faced the A's on May 12, yielding one run on five hits in six innings.

    Game 3
    Tuesday, Oct 9

    _________
    Anibal Sanchez__________Brett Anderson

    74.2 ___ IP___ 35.0
    3.68 ___ FIP___ 2.72
    6.87 ___K/9___ 6.43
    1.81 __BB/9__ 1.80
    0.96 __HR/9__ 0.26

Other guys: A 2-2 record with a 2.43 ERA in September helped Sanchez make his case to be the Game 3 starter of the ALDS. He has allowed one run in his past 15 1/3 innings. It will be Sanchez's first postseason start in his seven-year career.
A's: Anderson missed most of the season while recovering from Tommy John surgery. He debuted in August but strained his right oblique muscle on Sept. 19. This will be his first game after a three-week rehab.

    Game 4
    Wednesday, Oct 10

    _________
    Max Scherzer__________AJ Griffin

    187.2 ___ IP___ 82.1
    3.27 ___ FIP___ 3.85
    11.08 ___K/9___ 7.00
    2.88 __BB/9__ 2.08
    1.10 __HR/9__ 1.09

Other guys: Scherzer will be pitching on six days' rest after getting back on the mound for last Wednesday's regular-season finale. He missed a turn in the rotation with deltoid soreness in the front of his right shoulder, but says he feels ready to pitch.
A's: The A's are going to need Griffin to get back on track for game 4 as he struggled in 3 of his last 4 starts in the regular season. HR's and walks were his problem towards the end, in those final 15.7 IP he had 11K's to 8 BB's and 5HR's. He's going to have to get back to throwing strikes and keeping it in the yard if he wants to keep the A's in the game.

    Game 5
    Thursday, Oct 11

    _________
    Justin Verlander__________Jarrod Parker

    238.1 ___ IP___ 181.1
    2.94 ___ FIP___ 3.43
    9.03 ___K/9___ 6.95
    2.27 __BB/9__ 3.13
    0.72 __HR/9__ 0.55

Other guys: Way back in August, Jim Leyland lined up his rotation so that Verlander would be in line to start a Division Series and finish it if it went the distance. A Coco Crisp leadoff homer was the only run Verlander allowed over seven innings in Game 1.
A's: Though the losing pitcher in Game 1, Parker fared well in his first career postseason start, limiting the Tigers to two earned runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and one walk in 6 1/3 innings.

I remember now. We had 5 hits and 3 walks in the 6 innings he pitched, which was good, but we just couldn't knock in runs.

I'm kinda shocked we have Milone pitching in Detroit. His home/road splits are pretty noticeable.

    At home he sports a 2.74 ERA/3.16 FIP/3.97 xFIP with 5.75 K/9 - 1.37 BB/9 - 0.55 HR/9.

    On the road he has a 4.83 ERA/4.76 FIP/4.08 xFIP with 7.29 K/9 - 2.07 BB/9 - 1.77 HR/9.

The homeruns are the clear difference maker there. If he can keep it in the park he should be good. Let's keep our fingers crossed...

The A's probably think his HR/FB rate is unsustainably high on the road. I agree with them. Also, check his road numbers the last couple months, they've been fine.
