Completely agree. Not sure $13 mil would have locked him up. But 8 years/$150 sounds about right (get him for year 27 - 34).

As with everything, there are 2 sides of every coin.
on one side, you re-negotiate the deal and could get a better team friendly deal... on the other side, the player is bargaining from a position of strength and usually gets a deal that the team regrets later.

As with anything, nothing is a one size fits all deal. In this case, the Yanks had a dealin place until 2014 and had no plans to have Robbie or anyone else try to make those years worth more (Boras' favorite thing to do)

I tend to agree with NYY stance on this. For every 1 downside, there are 5 (7-10 if the agent is Scott Boras) upsides to the yankee policy. In robbies case, SB would have wanted to throw out the 2012 & 2013 options and have robbie paid at a higher rate and have the extention from there... which would have cost the Yanks more in both of those years... quite a bit more...

He may want 10 years but that does not mean anyone will offer him that deal. 31 year old 2B at the end of next season who wants to be locked up until he is 41. Only the most crazy of teams will touch that. Of course he is a Boras client so they will seek the absolute max until the very end.

I have been saying for awhile that the Yanks should work out something this offseason with Cano and if it looks bad let him walk at the end of next season. Yanks would have gotten the best years out of him and would not be locked down in some huge contract. If he wants to rework his deal and sign for 5 with a team option for a 6th that makes more sense.
