I'd be ok with signing Dallas Braden, even though when we signed Wada, he was compared to Dallas Braden. You can always use another lefty. Joe Saunders helped us out a lot down the stretch and in the playoffs. Good AAA depth in case Wada doesn't come back healthy.

I still kind fo want us to see what we can get for Jim Johnson and try to sign Brian Wilson. He will be cheaper and JJ won;t be on our team in 2 years anyway.

I also think Strop and O'Day could close just fine.

So I heard that the Mets are going to have their 11 pick protected if they signed Bourn, I know that they got bumped out of protection when Mark Appel did not sign but too bad. I'll be the first to call BS if MLB lets this go through. I really think the Os would sign him if they did not have to give up a pick. Same goes for many other teams teams.

So what's the deal with Jair jurrjens. the deal hasn't been finalized and we r still analyzing his health records. Hearing the deal might not even happen now.

We'll see about Jair. If he is hurt and they know it, no point in paying him 1.5 bills. I'd rather reallocate that to international scouting or something else along those lines.

I'm ok with losing Saunders. I think it will hurt us, but only until we bring up Bundy or Gausman. If we can hover right above .500 until June ish, I think we will be posed for another run when the re-enforcements are ready.

Yep. 4 yrs 48 million and I heard 5th yr 12 million vesting option. Frustrating but, no thanks on those numbers. I also saw that Juir may have a really bad... career ending knee. Dallas Bradan is looking better. Hope this works out. Really we did very little this off season and its not like the AL East is going to be easy. What about Grady Sizemore? I see a nice performance based contract. Don't know if he can stay healthy? That's the question. If Juir falls threw I see us pulling the trigger on Porcello or one of the Dodger extra starters, and Justin Smoak. But I think we'll have to over pay now.

Yeah I was reading Jair may have no cartilage in the one knee. If that's the case I am glad we r doing research, but the initial news should have never leaked until all the records could have been looked into.

No major moves but we avoided arb hearings with all of our guys and we have Buck and DD long term.

While we didnt do a lot of additions this winter, look at what we do have. Reimold coming back, started last season hot, so if and i know its a big if, but if he is healthy and hits 270 20 - 30 HR and 85 Rbi we just replaced Reynolds and alot of strike out. JJ bounces back and hits closer to his average and OBP, and Markakis and mclouth a full year, I see Mclouth and Reimold spliting time in LF/DH. If Roberts is finally able to be healthy and actually hit, i would think he would be able to hit 250 with 15 to 20 Doubles, not many HR, but that would be an improvement over the offense at 2nd last year, so i see the lineup like this

    Markakis or Mclouth
    JJ Hardy
    Markakis or mclouth
    Jones
    Weiters
    Davis
    reimold
    Machodo
    Roberts or casilla

    Pitching i see this

    Hammel
    Chen
    Tillman
    Gonzalez
up in the air for the 5th spot (Arreita or Britton) maybe Mcfarland or johnson

    Relief
    Johnson
    Strop
    O'Day
    Ayala
    Patton
    Hunter
    Matusz

So I think I've been a bit frustrated along with everyone else over the lack of moves. Not that there are any moves jumping off the page that I am shocked we didn't pull off.....but still. So it got me thinking and what do you guys think about trading for Alfonsio Soriano? I've heard the Cubs are willing to eat most of his salary and it wouldn't require a top prospect to get him. I think he would really work great as the DH platoon with Betemit. Last year Betemit hit lefties well posting a .302 and 11 hrs. Unfortunatly his average dropped to .140 against righties. Enter Soriano who while not great, hit .263 with 24 hrs and 83 rbi against righties. Those two platooning at dh would then allow Reimold and Mclouth to platoon in left. Last year Mclouth hit .197 vs lefties and .255 vs righties. For his career (cant really judge off of last year) Reimold has hit .258 against lefties.

I udnerstand these arent the best numbers but it puts us in a position where we don't have to play someone with horrible splits (mclouth and betemit). So the line up would look something like this:

    1. Mclouth/Reimold
    2. JJ
    3. Markakis
    4. Jones
    5. Weiters
    6. Davis
    7. Soriano/Betemit
    8. Machado
    9. Roberts

I also think, is we dont get Jair, we probably wont make a trade. I think they are hoping Wada will be able to come back and contribute as a starter.....

You know, I'm actually a little shocked by the numbers and a little impressed. I remember reading one of Earl Weavers books on the Orioles and he had very similar opinions about overpaying players. He argued that you could have two specialist (like good versus lefties/rights as you mentioned) for 1/5 the cost of having one superstar who could do both.

I don't really like the idea of Soriano at all, but I do like your idea.

I think the O's are going to rely on three things this year.

    1) Depth at positions
    2) The growth of younger players
    3) The Farm to fill needs

I always wish we had more pitching, but time will tell.

I agree with your three 'keys to the season' if you will, but the problem is I dont see anyone on the roster or in the minors who could be considered that DH against righties. I mean we need SOMEONE besides Betemit as his numbers suggest.....I just think we need to fill that position externally...

Just for the sake of argument..not because I believe it...lets say the O's go the route I suggested for this situation.

Option 1) Betemits numbers will go up due to his age and experience this year. Flat out, he just progresses.

Option 2) With all the returning players we could have a rotation this year of Chris Davis/Nate M/Marky Mark/XAvery/B-Rob all rotating through the DH spot and in theory should do better if Betemit hasn't improved.

Option 3) There is someone in the minors who makes an impression in spring training who will fill the need.

All this being said, I don't like it...I'd rather find someone proven (Maybe even Soriano for the RIGHT price...which is cheap) for this role UNTIL a long term option has become available.

Honestly, who knows at this point, someone could be cut from another roster during spring training, we could still potentially sign or trade but my guess is we are done until the season starts to get an idea of what we have.

I'm not crazy about the current roster, but I wasn't last year either. I hope I'm proven wrong.

Well Jurrjens is officially signed albeit a minor league deal and not the initial major league deal. Very low risk signing. Smart deal especially since their are true questions about his health.
