Well back to the players i would like to see on a limited budget this year.

Give me Keppinger, he can play 3 IF positions (1st, 2nd, 3rd) and is a good RH bat.

I don't know if we are going to go the one reliever or two reliever route but let's JP Howell if they decide to go left handed or Peralta, Grilli, Cruz if they decide to go RH.

Ty Wigginton is an option if they also need a backup RH 1st baseman (who can also play the OF)

I would try to bring Hairston back, although i know he wants a multiyear deal (so no if he does)

Try to find a catcher Hundley, Arencibia, Ross, anyone besides Thole.

Then for the OF, explore the trade market see who's available. Chris Young doesn't excite me at all, i think they will need to go outside the box for this one. MetsJets suggested Choo (he would be a nice addition) but guys like Rios, Kubel, and Upton are probably way too rich for the Mets blood.

I know these aren't significant upgrades but what can they do with limited payroll flexibility.

this isn't awful, but even then, i really don't think we'll even get this. we still lack the power we need and i'm not sold on our outfield (i don't think young is that good). bullpen is okay and our starting pitching will be as good next year as it was this year.

This has gone on far enough. Anything that might make the Mets even remotely resemble a competitive team is rightfully derided as economically unrealistic. This thread should be closed on the grounds that it is morbidly depressing.

The Outfield and its defense is a lot better tho.

Progression with the Mets imo will take baby steps.

I tried making moves to compete (Davis, Arrencibia, Young, Affeldt) while spending a realistic amount of money.

Remember the quote in the paper. We won't increase payroll by much. I tried to somehow mix that into my realistic idea.

Speed added at the top of the lineup. (Since Bourn and Upton are too expensive)

Power improved at catcher. (DePodesta has ties with the Blue Jays who have D'Arnaud)

A center fielder who had a down year but is a solid ball player. (Not Justin Upton but more realistic)

One of the best lefty arms (We need a second lefty since Byrdak went down with injury)

plus an established American league closer who throws hard. (At age 24 Perez had an ERA in the 1's)

I would consider that a very successful offseason from the mets standpoint.

I dont know what more you could expect, realistically.

I agree with all of this. I would be extremely happy with this offseason for sure. I could definitely see a similar product on the field in 2013, and I wouldn't be against it at all. This team has a lot of room for growth, and by adding 1 more big bat via FA when Santana and Bay are gone, (and possibly adding another veteran SP) I could definitely see this team competing in the NL for the East and Wildcard. Davis is a very underrated player. He steals a ton of bases and plays very solid defense in left. To be honest, the only move that I see as very difficult to make is for Perez, but I'll gladly eat those words if we get him
