Well one thing about that is you cannot teach velocity. You have it or you don't. I'd love to get a shot at someone who can develop. This is the type of signing I look forward to regardless of time frame to develop. Trade for a rebound candidate like Masterson and build slowly. Don't overspend and be stuck with another Drew, Lackey etcetera.

This is the way to do it, sign them before the NPB ruins them. It worked with Tazawa. But whatever his velocity is in Japan, you can take 2-3 mph off of it. They use a smaller, denser ball with better grip that travels faster.

    He'd still throw 96-97 mph.

They kid is still young and can be molded. Where as Dice-K was set on his work out routine, and was stubborn when it came to adapting to MLB style.

Right. When the Sox signed Dice-K he was around 30 and was used to pitching in the Japanese league his whole life, he had to adjust on the fly.

Signing this kid at 18 would allow him to develop in the American minor league baseball system, which better prepares him for the MLB.

DiceK was 26. DiceK was able to throw pretty hard his first couple years as well, his velocity dropped a lot over the years. This has nothing to do with DiceK anyways. If this kid comes to the US he can only get a bonus at around $2M at most. He would go to the low minors. It's like signing a first round pick out of the draft.

I remember when we passed up on acquiring some international phenom named Aroldis Chapman. How did he pan out at the Major League level?

Now that pitching is drastically an obvious need for this ball club today and in the future, it's probably wise to take a shot at this kid.

I'm still annoyed we didn't go hard after Chapman and Solar. Id still like to get Jose Mujica. This Japanese kid def seems worth a shot as well.

Right there with you, but from what I've read, he has stronger links to the Rangers and if they really want him they have the ability to give him more $.
