______________________________After missing all of last season following Tommy John surgery, Wainwright came on strong down the stretch in 2012. He struggled to a 7-8 record with a 4.56 ERA before the All-Star break, but went 7-5 with a 3.28 ERA in the season's second half.
Manager Davey Johnson has decided that Gonzalez will be his starter for Game 1 and for good reason. Besides being Washington's best pitcher, Gonzalez is a leading candidate for the NL Cy Young Award. He has 21 wins with a 2.89 ERA.

__________________________________________________Garcia gets the call at Busch Stadium, where he went 4-2 with a 2.82 ERA and didn't allow a homer in nine starts. On the road, he was just 3-5 with a 5.02 ERA and served up nine long balls. He also closed the season with three straight wins.
Zimmermann took advantage of not being on a innings limit this year and pitched close to 200 frames. Since having Tommy John surgery in August 2009, Zimmermann is 21-21 with an ERA under 3.20 in 65 starts.

______________________________Originally expected to miss the season following thoracic outlet surgery, Carpenter made his debut Sept. 21 and turned in three starts. He looks to match his '11 playoff success, as he went 4-0 and won the NLDS- and World Series-clinching games.
Jackson, the only Nats starter with playoff experience prior to 2012, will face the Cards again after they roughed him up for nine runs in 1 1/3 innings on Sept. 28. He bounced back with a quality 6 2/3-inning outing last Wednesday vs. Philadelphia.

__________________________________________________Lohse extended the Cardinals' season by helping lead the club to a Wild Card win in Atlanta on Friday. It was Lohse's first postseason victory in five starts, and it is the right-hander's latest achievement in what has been a career year.
Detwiler struggled in his last start of the season against St. Louis, allowing seven runs (three earned) on four hits and five walks over 2 1/3 innings. The lefty pitched much better at home (8-2, 2.59 ERA) than on the road (2-6, 4.38 ERA) this year.
