-mlbtrrangers considering zack greinke
by ben nicholson-smith [november 1 at 2:09pm cst]
the rangers are seriously considering the idea of pursuing free agent right-hander zack greinke, according to mlb.com’s t.r. Sullivan. The rangers are studying the possibility of signing greinke, though their interest will depend on his asking price.
Not only would signing greinke provide the rangers’ rotation with a boost, it would prevent the free agent from returning to anaheim. Re-signing greinke is a "huge priority" for the angels, danny knobler reported yesterday. The pursuit of greinke will get “serious” with the angels and rangers involved, alden gonzalez of mlb.com wrote today (twitter link). The dodgers could also be interested, since they need pitching and have the resources to spend big on free agents.
Greinke is mlbtr’s top-ranked free agent for the upcoming offseason. The excel sports management client won’t be able to sign with a team other than the angels until saturday morning. Check out mlbtr’s complete list of the year’s top 50 free agents and predict their ultimate destinations while you’re at it.

Rangers eyeing Big Papi
David Ortiz has been negotiating with the Boston Red Sox and reports say he wants a multi-year contract. Monday, ESPNBoston.com's Gordon Edes reported that the two sides were closing in on a two-year deal. If that was the case at the time, things have hit a snag and said snag could be in the form of the Texas Rangers.
FoxSports.com's Ken Rosethal reported Thursday night that the Rangers have serious interest in Ortiz in what could be the club's way to cover for the potential loss of Josh Hamilton, also a free agent.
If the Rangers were to sign Ortiz, it would certainly kill any chances Mike Napoli might return, and could alter the role of Michael Young.
Without Ortiz, the Red Sox could take a look at Travis Hafner, who had his option declined by the Cleveland Indians earlier this week. Boston could also use the DH spot as a flex slot in the lineup and go after a couple of outfielders. Cody Ross is one the team has expressed interest in bringing back for 2013, and the likes of B.J. Upton, Nick Swisher, Melky Cabrera and Hamilton are on the open market.
The Rangers' interest in Ortiz is a bit surprising since they have long appeared to prefer having flexibility with the DH spot, and with Nelson Cruz battling injuries the past few years it might be nice to have that option and go with a better defender in an outfield corner. With Ortiz in town, Cruz has to sit or play the field regularly. Just a thought.
ARLINGTON -- The Rangers have announced that their television and broadcast teams will return for 2013.
Steve Busby remains the play-by-play voice on television with Tom Grieve returning as analyst, while Eric Nadel and Matt Hicks once again team on the Rangers Radio Network. Eleno Ornelas will continue as the lead Spanish broadcaster.
Dave Barnett's contract has expired and not renewed. Barnett left the TV broadcasts in the middle of this past season due to personal reasons. Busby moved over from radio to replace him on television and Hicks was brought in from Corpus Christi to join Nadel. Bryan Dolgin, who hosted the pregame and postgame radio shows, will not be returning as well.
This will be Nadel's 35th season as a Rangers broadcaster and he is a finalist for the 2013 National Baseball Hall of Fame's Ford C. Frick Award for broadcasting excellence. Grieve returns for his 19th season as television analyst.
Nadel will also be the emcee on Saturday for the North Oak Cliff Music Festival. That takes place from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. CT at Lake Cliff Park in Dallas, with Joe Ely, Alejandro Escovedo and Caroline Wonderland among those scheduled to perform.
Shame. Was a fan of Barnett.
i dont like the idea of signing Ortiz, I feel we are a better team by using the DH as a flex spot and signing him will decrease ABs probably for a handful of guys and I dont like that at all. Plus who knows which Ortiz you are gonna get, the one who mashes the ball? the one who has a hole in his bat for months at a time? or the one who is on the DL?....you might as well open the checkbook a little more and resign Hamilton with all those question marks
If we lose Hamilton, and Napoli, and miss on some of the key FA outfielders, then Ortiz will work. He will take a ton of time from Young (maybe that is a good thing). He will also limit the flexibility of the team as slugger82685 points out.
Quest to watch a game in all 30 baseball stadiums, so far I have seen: Arizona, Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Colorado, Detroit, Houston, Kansas City, LA Angels, LA Dodgers, Miami, NY Mets, NY Yankees, Philly, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, St. Louis, San Diego, Seattle, Tampa Bay, Texas, Toronto, Washington
I see why they'd be interested, he's worth a look... but I don't think he'll be worth the price tag.

Another thing is that it seems like he will sign fast to whoever signs him so if it is us then we are immediately hindering the possibility of bringing in other guys because of it. So say we sign Ortiz for 2 years $26 mil and then all of a sudden Hamilton's market falls apart and he could actually be had for 5 years $100 mil well I think I would rather take that then having an aging Ortiz for 2 years......basically it just kind of limits our decisions so early in the offseason
I'd be alright with bringing in Ortiz if we got rid of FACE. We already have a guy who can't field and is manning the DH spot, and several infield spots as well unfortunately...
