I wouldnt trade Montero or Smoak. I wouldnt trade for Butler unless Montero is going to be our everyday catcher. And even then, Zunino is close to being ready. I just don't get it. I like Butler but don't see a fit. Unless he is cheap cause he is not enough of a upgrade over Smoak in my opinion. Not enough to give up one of the big 3 for sure.
First of all nobody would want smoak in a trade, I'm pretty sure the organization is on the fence about giving up on him.
I believe in montero as a hitter, but the fact we have a catcher of the future, he doesn't play another position, 1b is an option but we will have to develop him... at DH I think most teams will go the FA budget approach rather than developing a key player there with all the interleague games. Montero just makes things a cluster so if we traded him and got value for him I wouldn't be upset, if we keep him that's fine too as I'm a believer.
I think we know for sure that if the org. is serious about Butler, then they either think Montero can play 1st, or are prepared to trade him. They think about things like this, despite what we believe some times.
FWIW, Bill James has Montero at .285 with and .800+ OPS and 22 HR.
I think he's right.
Assuming the fence change doesn't affect air flow that much, it looks like the fence move might have helped Montero out on 2 batted balls.
My worry, is that most of his hits occur between 200' and 300', from LF to CF. The area where the fences are being moved into, he has almost nothing. Seems to me more of his hits will simply be turned into outs.
Unless he can utilize RF better and develop more power, I'm doubtful.
