Unfortunately Phils are in deep trouble if they miss out on Pagan.
clearly they dont want to overpay Bourn and Hamilton and who else is left.
do we really want our big offseason improvement to be the return of Victorino?

    Illa,

They non-tendered Schierholtz because they already have Nix under contract and they're pretty comparable players. They HAVE to pay Nix whereas they only had to pay Nate if they offered arbitration. It's a net savings of about $3.5 million.

From the non-tender list, I would like to see the Phillies chase Tom Gorzelanny, Jack Hannahan, Ian Stewart, and/or Andres Torres.

None of the non-tenders appear to have major upside, though a few of them (those listed above) provide quite a bit of utility. Gorzelanny is the best fit since the Phillies really need 1-2 more swing starters.

With the TV deal right around the corner the Phillies must put together 2 great years to get maximum deal. They are looking at a 6 billion dollar deal if they stay on top. Dont blow this by not spending money now. Need to spend money to make money.

By the way i feel that Mark Reynolds numbers are very similar to BJ Upton minus the SB's. It wouldnt surprise me if the Phils give him a shot. Pagan, swisher, Reynolds and a trade for a RP.

I know he was definitely a name worth considering as someone that would've fit in nicely before his breakout season two years ago.

    Now? Psh.

There's a reason the Orioles decided to stick him mainly at 1st base this year. Dude can't play third to save his life. Any good coming from the 25-30 HRs he'd hit are completely negated by his glove.

One guy I would love to see the Phils go after is Zach Lutz.

Granted, he's on the Mets - but he's a local guy (went to the same college as myself), and he's been RAKING everywhere he plays. Sure, he's a little old to be playing where he is, but he would've been at the MLB level if Wright wasn't blocking 3B.

I'd be perfectly happy with a Golson for Mayberry type swap, where you're swapping out parts on the Island of Misfit Toys.

    fyi,

The Phillies have 38 roster spots filled so they can take up to two players in the Rule 5 draft. There's really only one player on the 40 man (Joe Savery) who is an easy cut. JC Ramirez could also be cut relatively painlessly.

I expect the Phillies to target a catcher in the draft - although I am unaware if any are available. Without making any moves, Kratz and Valle will open the season on the roster.

the Phillies signed Humberto Quintero to a minor league deal. I'd imagine it will be him and Kratz on the opening day roster.

ah that's right. Still, they have to find room for him on the 40 man, which will be a challenge.
