David Amerson is tumbling down draft boards and could be available late 1st, it would be scary to see our coaches get their hands on a physically gifted DB like that....I have no doubts they could coach this kid up to be a star.
On another note I watched some of SMU today just to see Margus Hunt and he was much better than I expected, he was explosive off the line and disruptive all game long, they had to double and triple him to even get a pass off, SMU's db's suck tho lol.
I like these 2 kids as of now they're my Rd 1 and 2 favorite players. They're both perfect "redshirt" candidates. When Rodgers is done we kick brown inside and Amerson can play on nickel and Culliver moves to starter and when Smith is done Hunt can take that monster task on. Let them learn from the men themselves and keep this thing going.
Jim Harbaugh "LOSING IS NOT AN OPTION"
Well after this last game I'm still not really sold on our secondary. If for some reason a quality CB falls to us wherever we end up, I wouldn't be opposed to taking them, or one of the safety prospects. I also wouldn't be opposed to moving up (not necessarily this year) for a top CB prospect if one emerges. I like having a nice core of guys, but I'd love to land a Claiborne, Revis, Aso, kind of guy.

I'm also concerned about Staley's concussions. He had a different helmet in wk 1 but it apparently contributed to his nose getting jacked up so he switched back. I'm confortable with Boone at LT, but not with Davis at RG. I wonder if he or Kilgore will start. Davis has not looked solid in the PT he's gotten so far in my opinion. A lot of guys have run by him.
We need that number 1 CB that can shut down a teams number 1 WR by himself, take away a whole side of the field. I feel like we're playing all coverage this year to try and mask the weakness of the unit as a whole and blitzing very little.

Yeah, I understand your point of view. I don't give the coaches any hell for it especially since Smith seems to be a great tackler when he gets his hands on folks. I do like the idea of specialists though. If I remember correctly (which I honestly may not) I think Charles Haley was mainly a pass rush specialist his whole career. Smith may turn into the Demarcus Ware type player that we all hope and think he can be....but if not a Charles Haley type of player will do just fine.
It just worries me to have someone just be a specialist and be really good at it. I mean, if you have someone like a Hester, well a KR/PR won't demand a TON of money, but a pass rusher (one of the premium positions) will command alot of money, and they won't even be on the field all the time. Look at Irvin with Seattle, tearing it up as a situational guy, but will never have the size to be full time, yet I'm sure he'll get alot of cash come contract time. If teams stay out of obvious passing situations, well then you've got an overpaid bench jockey.

On a side note, my fantasy, never gonna happen, why even think about it moment for this draft is moving up for Star Lotulelei. There are alot of 1st round level DTs we could nab tho that I like, Jenkins out of Georgia and Short from Purdue would look just as nice in SF.

Our pass rush isn't struggling. We are typically only rushing 4 players and (aside from the Giants game) getting good pressure...not a high number of sacks, but still good pressure. The Giants are sacked and pressured less than any team in the league, and I thought they got away with quite a few holds on Justin Smith (perhaps no-calls because of the Gilbride comments).
I said it before sunday we need a third pass rusher to help out Brooks and Aldon. We're now 27th in Sacks for a reason.
We're still 4th against the pass despite the secondary not getting a ton of help from the pass rush.
