Houston Hurler Fashions Fine First Season
Friday, November 9th, 1990: Steve Avery's age didn't show very often in his first year. He performed more like a veteran on the hill for the Houston Astros and today he walked away with the 1990 National Rookie of the Year Award.

The 20-year-old starter registered a 19-13 record this season in 40 starts. Over 243.2 innings he gave up 202 hits, struck out 162 and issued 65 walks as he held the opposition to a .226 batting average and fashioned a 2.88 ERA.

The Red Sox third baseman took the honor by hitting .315 in 90 games this season and finishing with 110 hits, 27 home runs, 72 RBIs and 65 runs scored.

Atlanta Wins NL The Behindmydesk Award (Cy Young)
Sunday, November 11th, 1990: 25-year-old Dwight Gooden of the Atlanta Braves put together a good year in 1990 for such a young player. Gooden was named today as the winner of the National The Behindmydesk Award (Cy Young).

Boston's Smoltz Snags The Behindmydesk Award (Cy Young)
Sunday, November 11th, 1990: The Boston Red Sox have a rising superstar or maybe even a budding Hall-of-Famer in the making.
It's John Smoltz, this year's American The Behindmydesk Award (Cy Young) selection. This blossoming hurler wowed fans, peers and sportswriters with a fabulous performance.

Smoltz compiled a 25-6 record in 40 starts, tallied 258 strikeouts in 269.2 innings and recorded a 2.64 ERA. Other clubs managed only a .198 batting average against him.

NL's Best Hitter for 1990 Named
Monday, November 12th, 1990: Barry Bonds has been around MLB enough to know a good hot streak when he sees one -- and he got to see one firsthand all year. For his standout run through the 1990 season, he's taking home the The Poodski Award (MVP) in the National.

The Chicago right fielder put up a batting average of .272 with 24 doubles, 6 triples, 36 home runs and 112 RBIs.

1990 AL Best Batter, Boston's Griffey Jr.
