Clay Bucholz and Trevor Cahill's extension would probably be a base starting point. I would see something like this
5yr/$35.75M with options in '18 worth $15M and '19 worth $17M
'13- $750K
'14- $3.5M
'15- $7.5M
'16- $11M
'17- $13M
'18- $15M option $1M buyout
'19- $17M option $1.5M buyout
The fact of the matter is, when looking at young pitchers who have signed extensions during their final year before arbitration, Buchholz and Cahill are good comparisons, but the fact is that Sale has only been a starter for 1 year. That will hurt him a bit. But this would be great for the Sox if they can lock him up.
This is what I would do, I don't know that the Sox would get both options on the deal, but I think it would be close to that.

Even if the two option years are for 20M that is still a deal you sign. The chance at locking an ace for 7 years and less than 100M is too good too pass up!
