I'm really excited about this mission - I had no idea till now the rover is one ton. Seems like a lot of pretty comprehensive instruments on board...

It's collecting data about the climate and geology of Mars. Searching for signs of life, and also helping determine whether future manned missions to Mars would be possible.

The actual mission itself is pretty "standard" by NASA practice, but it was the actual landing of Curiosity that was amazing. They basically 'shot' it at Mars and landed it perfectly.

Maki from Sci-ence.org explains it well:

Congratulations to the MSL team and NASA JPL for the most flawless execution of an utterly insane plan. Our species has landed a goddamn truck on the surface of another world using a parachute and a flying crane. There are no words.

The excitement in the control room as each stage went off was contagious, and I had to keep myself from shouting along with the hard working folks at mission control.

There is truth in the axiom “Those who dare, win,” and we all saw it in action last night.

    Cheers
