Cardinals acquire Jason Heyward from Braves

Cardinals acquired OF Jason Heyward and RHP Jordan Walden from the Braves for RHP Shelby Miller and RHP Tyrell Jenkins.

It's a blockbuster trade that seemingly sprung out of nowhere. Heyward had an underwhelming .271/.351/.384 batting line in 2014 for the Braves, but he rated as one of the best defensive outfielders in baseball and he still has tremendous offensive upside at age 25. Now we'll see if the Cardinals can extend the former first-round pick, who is scheduled to become a free agent after the 2015 season.

I'm not confident we can extend him. I still like the trade tho.

Gives Grichuk or Piscotty another year to prep RF

I feel lik Mo only made this trade because he knows he can extend him. Maybe I'm just being too optimistic though.

Had to know a move like this was coming after the passing of OT and the little to no production throughout the playoffs coming from right field.

I don't think he makes the deal if he doesn't think he can extend him honestly

If he can extend him, it is a GREAT deal for the Cards.

    Lineup for the Cards:

    1. Carpenter 3B - .295/.385/.430
    2. Heyward RF - .265/.350/.400
    3. Molina C - .300/.350/.440
    4. Holliday LF - .290/.380/.475
    5. Peralta SS - .280/.345/.450
    6. Adams 1B - .290/.320/.450
    7. Wong 2B - .260/.300/.450
    8. Jay CF - .295/.360/.390
    9. Pitcher

    Bench
    CF - Bourjos - .250/.310/.400
    IF - Descalso - .250/.320/.350
    C - Cruz .225/.270/.310
    OF - Grichuk - .250/.300/.425
1B - Right handed bat to platoon with Adams

This is a decent defensive team, that should score around 750 runs

I'd like a good platoon partner for Adams, considering he is a career .306/.348/.503 hitter vs righties. Find someone that can compliment that at first with him, and then I would just like to find a capable back up catcher that is better than Cruz....and our roster is basically set (could add a lefty reliever potentially)....and we are still way under our budget. We can easily add another 10-20 million to our 2015 payroll for one year stop gaps at those three spots (Right handed hitting 1B, a backup C, and a lefty specialist) And none of those three positions are vital, but I would really like to see a right handed compliment to Adams...and ideally it's someone like Jeff Baker, who you could put at second base or third base if you were in a pinch.

    Rotation:

    1. Wainwright
    2. Wacha
    3. Lynn
    4. Lackey
    5. Martinez/Cooney/Gonzales/Garcia/Lyons/Greenwood/Petrick/Whiting

    Bullpen
    Long - Maness - R
    Freeman - L
    Tuivalva - R
    Choate - L
    Setup - Siegrist - L
    Setup - Walden - R
    C - Rosnethal - R

Leaves us about 10-20 million to get that right handed platoon bat, a backup catcher, and maybe a reliever better than Tuivalva and Freeman/Choate to make things deeper

Sign a buy low starting option for depth that will happily hang out in Memphis for the chance to come up for depth, and you are done.

Walden is a really nice secret piece in this trade.

There is no reason for Heyward to not reach free agency though.

Dude is very young, he can easily find a 10 year deal in free agency, probably for around $200 million. I don't know that the Cardinals are going to be suitors for that

@KMOXSports: Mozeliak: deal is focused on short term but hopefully Heyward will want to stay here longer... Future not discussed with Jason yet

I don't think Heyward gets a 10 year deal. I think it's closer to 7. Just what I think. Think 10 year deals will only be going to big time offensive players

Heyward a very good offensive player but his defense is key

God, if he would sign a 5/90 extension today, then you jump all over that.

I think Jason knows better and sees free agency.

Cards might be smart to wait as well, considering what Grichuk and Piscotty could be.

The interesting deal here, is that Heyward is a better defensive player than Jay, and should play center over him.

But I doubt that's what happens.

Just for a point of reference, prior to the 2014 season it was reported that Heyward turned down an extension from the Braves that was just shy of Freeman's deal (8yr/135M). 5/90 will not get it done. Heyward wants FA Market money.

I haven't seen and can't find that report

According to him they never talked about an extension
