    Cards trade Rzepczynski to Cleveland

PITTSBURGH •The Cardinals have traded lefty Marc Rzepczynski to the Cleveland Indians in exchange for a minor-league infielder. Two sources, both with direct knowledge of the move, have confirmed the deal to The Post-Dispatch.

The Cardinals received shortstop Juan Herrera in exchange for the lefty reliever.

The Cardinals confirmed the deal after the Post-Dispatch's first report.

    Rzepzynski will report to Cleveland.

Rzepczynski was optioned to Class AAA Memphis this morning in order to clear a spot on the roster for a fresh arm. The Cardinals made two moves this morning to add relievers -- optioning Rzepczynski and Fernando Salas to Class AAA Memphis.

Herrera, 20, has hit .275 in 39 games the Cleveland's affiliate in the short-season New York-Penn League. A native of the Dominican Republic, Herrera has hit 9 doubles with 11 RBI. He'll move to the Cardinals' short-season affiliate at State College.

FWIW.. this appears to be the Cardinals moving Rzepczynski for the purpose of opening a roster spot. He wasn't having a particularly good season... and the Cardinals could use the roster spot...

The 20 year old kid the Cardinals received in this trade Juan Herrera, doesn't hit particularly well, doesn't have outstanding power, doesn't run very effectively, doesn't have exceptional range but does have an outstanding and accurate throwing arm. He is over in Mahoning Valley (The Scrappers).. short season A ball..

Meh.. this trade may help the Indians this year.. IDK what the Cardinals get out of the deal other than an open roster spot..
