The Marlins are going to want to moon for Johnson and as good as can be I'm not sure i would trade 3-5 young MLBers and/or top prospect, which is the rumored asking price, for a guy that has a history of shoulder issues, missed most of last yr, has declining stuff and is struggling this yr. If they were getting the guy from 3yrs ago i would want him for our selves but he's not even close to that guy. Plus i know they have payroll concerns about getting under the luxury tax. Paying Johnson 14 m each of the next 2 yrs isn't going to help, plus they have to decide if they are going to pay big money for Ellsbury and Bard. Unless they are able to unload a couple contracts like Beckett, Lackey or Crawford, non of which are going to be easy for them to move without eating a ton of money. Lackeys contract is worse for them than AJ was for us and Crawford's contract is the new Vernon Wells.

On a side note i think the Marlins made a hell of a trade getting a young and as highly touted prospect as Turner for what amounts to a slight above average pitcher in Sanchez and an MLB average player in Infante

Another thing that will be interest to watch is what the Angels and Rangers are going to do before the deadline. In know they both need another front of the rotation starter and in the Rangers case i imagine they would like to get 2. With Colby Lewis done for the season, Feliz's uncertain health and role when he return, Oswalt's having back trouble again and Holland having a very poor yr their really going to have to add a couple of good starter to stay WS contenders. If the Rays make Sheilds available and the Phillies make Hamels available it will be interesting to see how much of their farm they are willing to trade to add 1 or 2 of Sheilds, Hamels or Greinke. If neither Hamels or Sheilds become available the bidding war or Greinke could get quite step

Were very fortunate that we don't absolutely need a top starter right now. With this trade for Ichiro and with Joba and Pettitte expected to return IMO our roster is in the best shape of all the contenders. Anything we add now is pretty much a luxury,, i could see them going after a utility infielder but thats about it. Its really to bad Nunez has regressed so far from last yr, i really liked him last yr and what he brought to the team. I really hope he can get his fielding issues figured out by the playoffs. His bat and especially his speed could be a huge benefit to us down the stretch

I think about the only thing we could use is a speedy utility IFer, too bad Nunez has regressed so far because he is exactly the type of player we could use to solidify our roster down the stretch

Honestly, I'd really consider trading for a reliever that can get both lefties and right-handed hitters out. Qualls, Rapada, Eppley and even Logan are all specialists. Having two specialists is alright but 4 is crazy. Getting Joba back would be great and while his rehab velo reports have been awesome, he's still a bit of an unknown at this point. Mariano is most likely a pipe dream at this point. If he's back for September, great.

I'd also consider an ex-top prospect that hasn't quite lived up to expectations yet especially at an OF position. Someone we can work on and potentially groom for a regular gig down the road. With Miami selling everybody, I have my eye out on Logan Morrison. There aren't any reports that say he's available (just speculation on my part) but I would love to have him. He's had some maturity concerns in the past and the team has demoted him in the past to 'teach him a lesson.'

A catcher might be another need. A guy that can actually play. Ramon Hernandez is a name that has been brought up. I don't know if he's still injured or not. He's having a poor 2012 with the bat but does have a proven track record. His two seasons prior ('10-'11) he put up a batting line of .290/.353./.437 in 188 games while maintaining a near 35% caught stealing rate. The Rockies are probably selling since I doubt they have a real shot at either the WC or the division so Ramon shouldn't be too expensive. He's signed for next season at a reasonable 3.2M and would be a good compliment to Austin Romine if we decide to part ways with Russell Martin after the season. He has prior AL East experience which is always a plus.

you make a very solid point about the BP, i was basing my point on a poor assumption on my part that Joba would come back and return to to his previous solid form. Also i'm still hoping Aardsma makes it back this season to contribute to the pen. I also would like to see them give Warren a shot in the pen, I ve always thought he would end up making a better reliever than a starter. His FB's because of their velo would play way up in short stints and he has a couple of good breaking pitches that would work pretty well in 1-2 inning stints. I think we'll probably have enough starters going forward for the rest of the yr, he might be worth a look out of the pen. I do agree we should keep our eyes open for a more versatile reliever, just in case Joba and Aardsma don't make it back.

The only thing about trading for good relievers is they often can be quite expensive and often don't workout nearly as well as hoped. Also relievers are often moved in August through waiver trades and if we waited it would give us time to see if Joba and Aardsma can contribute anything. If we were to go after a reliever of course i would prefer a Lefty but I have always liked Brandon League. His splits aren't very good this yr but i like his stuff and he has an intimidating mound presence. I'm sure their are better and probably cheaper options out their though.

I really like your idea of getting a ex top prospect and working with him for a long term spot down the road. I ve long thought Dom Brown would really benefit from a change of scenery and the Phillies have pretty much given up on him.Even though he struggling horribly this yr he has great tools that made him a top 5 prospect just a couple yrs ago. If he ever figured it out he has a swing thats perfect for YS and ihas a solid defensive tools. If we could get him for one or a couple low grade prospects or maybe Betances for Brown might work for both teams.

LoMo would be an awesome addition and probably something we should take a look at in the off season unless Miami would trade him now for something less than 2 or 3 of our top prospects.

As far as addressing our black hole at C, my only concern would be is that our pitchers have been pitching very well to both Martin and Stewart and i would hate to jeopardize that chemistry. As far as Hernandez i read the other day that the Rockies would listen to offers on him since they have another young C thats supposed to be nearly ready and pretty good. I know that their are several other contenders, most notably the Rays that are looking for catching help. I honestly think were stuck with what we have behind the plate for the rest of the yr and best case Romine and a good veteran backup will be better next yr at the plate than what we ve gotten this yr, which shouldn't be that hard. How much do u think Martin wished he would have taken that 3 yr deal at the beginning of the yr.

I know this might sound a little crazy for next yr but what would u think if the Yanks kicked the tires on Salty. I believe this was his final yr of arbitration and the Soxs have Lavarnway waiting in the wings in AAA. He's not the greatest defensive C but offensively he's been a hell of alot better than Martin and Stewart this yr. Just a thought on my part probably not my best

I agree and like alot of your points it should be interesting to see if Cashman has anymore tricks up his sleeve in the next week. I honestly wouldn't be shocked if Cashman made another splash but it wouldn't surprise me either if he didn't do much else.

Dempster said on twitter last night that he wasn't going to the Braves. I bet the Cubs are pissed because they were getting alot better prospect than i thought they would for him.

With the package the Dodgers are offering for Garza and getting Delgado from the Braves it would give them a pretty good start to building a new rotation

It's a rule that any player with 10 years experience and 5 years with the same team cannot be traded without his consent. Dempster has to consent to any trade, the same way Ichiro had to consent to his trade.

From what I read the trade was never official with the Cubs either. It was just a big push by Atlanta but a deal wasn't even given to Dempster to approve.
