MLBTR arb projections. JJ is toast but I don't have an issue with any of these other numbers.

    •Martin Prado - $7.7MM
    •Jair Jurrjens - $5.5MM
    •Tommy Hanson - $4MM
    •Eric O'Flaherty - $3.8MM
    •Jason Heyward - $3.5MM
    •Kris Medlen - $2MM
    •Jonny Venters - $1.4MM
    •Paul Janish - $900K
    •Peter Moylan - $800K
    •Cristhian Martinez - $700K

Updated again, with MLBTR's arbitration projections. They weren't that different from mine, but they're probably a touch more accurate.

Guaranteed contracts: Dan Uggla ($13M), Brian McCann ($12M), Tim Hudson ($9M), Paul Maholm ($6.5M)
    TOTAL: 4 players, $40.5M

    Arbitration: Martin Prado (3rd time, $7.7M), Tommy Hanson (1st, $4M), Eric O'Flaherty (3rd, $3.8M), Jason Heyward (1st, $3.5M), Kris Medlen (1st, $2M), Jonny Venters (1st, $1.4M), Cristhian Martinez (1st, $700K)
    TOTAL: 7 players, $23.1M

Minimum salary: Luis Avilan, Jose Constanza, Juan Francisco, Freddie Freeman, Cory Gearrin, Craig Kimbrel, Mike Minor, Andrelton Simmons
    TOTAL: 8 players, $4M

I'm pretty confident that these eight will make the team next year. The biggest doubt is probably Constanza, but given that no one is returning to the bench next year, he probably stands a solid chance to be the fifth outfielder.

    GRAND TOTAL: 19 players, $67.6M

So that leaves between about $24 million and $27 million to spend, with the following holes to fill:

--Starting 3B or LF (wherever Prado doesn't play)
    --Starting CF
--Three bench players to complement Francisco and Constanza (catcher, utility infielder, corner OF)
--One relief pitcher (I think six of the spots are set with O'Ventbrel, Martinez, Avilan and Gearrin, but Wren will probably bring in a Durbin-esque veteran)

Would like to see the Braves also try to buy out some of Heyward's and Prado's ARB years. The Braves aren't likely to spend all their money on FAs and in trades, and these moves could save a lot of money down the line.

Sheesh...all this young talent is going to cost us a bundle very soon. It seems like extending their contracts now would be a solid move which is a pretty big kink in making some kind of splash in the free agent market.
Trades are beginning to look like the most logical choice to fill holes.
It will be a most interesting off season.

I'd have four proposals on the table this winter. Just to throw out some quick numbers...

    Martin Prado: 4 years, $39 million through age-32 season in 2016 ($7.5M*, $9.5M, $10.5M, $11.5M)

    Jason Heyward: 6 years, $73 million through age-28 season in 2018 ($3.5M*, $7.5M*, $11.5M*, $15M, $17M, $18.5M)

Kris Medlen: 4 years, $28 million through age-30 season in 2016, plus two club options for 2017 and 2018 to bring total potential value to 6 years, $55.5 million ($2M*, $5.5M*, $8.5M*, $12M, $13M, $14.5M)

    Craig Kimbrel: 6 years, $30 million through age-30 season in 2018 ($0.5M*, $2.5M*, $4M*, $6M*, $8M, $9M)

All of these represent pretty significant discounts, but that's what players give up in exchange for security. And honestly, I think all of these guys are types who would stay in Atlanta long-term. None have hired notorious agents, and all of them seem to fit in the clubhouse and the city. Payroll commitments, including Uggla's deal would then be as follows year by year, assuming exercise of Medlen's options:

    2014: $38M, 5 players
    2015: $47.5M, 5 players
    2016: $44.5M, 4 players
    2017: $38M, 3 players
    2018: $42M, 3 players

None of those are commitments the Braves haven't worked with before. Even at the highest per-player average in 2018 (when presumably payroll will have risen anyway, even if just due to inflation), that's not much different than paying Dan Uggla, Derek Lowe and Chipper Jones a combined $36 million like the Braves did in 2012.

That'd be fine by me. It locks up the core and gives the Braves a reasonable amount of flexibility. I would think that at least Heyward and Prado get deals this winter.

At some time Freeman would need an offer made to him.

Should be 5 contracts in the Guaranteed section and 20 on the 25 man roster after the Laird signing. Not trying to nit pick, just noticed it.

Thanks. If I'm going to do this, it might as well be right. Corrected now.

So after the Upton signing we have between 9 and 12 millions to spend. Span will fit nicely, if we trade Hanson we could get a player like J. Upton, Shin Soo Choo or Alex Gordon.

Should be between 12-15 million to spend if I'm right... After the Hanson trade.

This is always a speculation issue. I guess it's better if only Wren and the front office know the exact number.
