It maybe be closer then you think. He won the rookie of the year in the truck series in 2010. Then he won the truck series title in 2011 and now he is only 3 points out of first place in the nationwide standings. If he wins the title this year then you will probably see him in cup next year. That's how it was for guys like Biffle, Harvick, and Brad. Plus it doesn't hurt that his grandfather owns a race team haha

Idk, maybe not if RC decides to bring the #3 back. Unless he just doesn't run the 31 anymore after 2014

Childress doesn't want to run 4 teams. He's done it twice now and both times he's scaled back down the following year

True so i guess it would be bye bye #31 lol. Where do you think Burton would go or do you think he would retire or do what Mark Martin has been doing? He doesn't really seem like an attractive FA imo

Move menard to the 31... Menard isn't really tied to a number, so he could swap from 27 to 31. Burton would probably retire, I don't see him as the guy that will hold on and run part time, and he hasn't really done anything to attract attention. There's guys in the nationwide series I think teams would give a shot

NASCAR mulls eliminating top 35 qualifying rule

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- NASCAR qualifying could have a very different look next season.
Series officials are mulling the elimination of the top-35 rule to put the focus back on speed.
Vice president of competition Robin Pemberton said Thursday he's already discussed the possibility with some teams and that fans want to see the fastest cars start the race. Since 2005, the top 35 in points have been guaranteed provisional starting spots at the next race, which has sometimes eliminated faster cars from starting the race.
All that could change in 2013.
''The top 35 was a good rule when we had impound races and that stuff,'' Pemberton said. ''But I think there's a lot of folks that like that speed gets you in.''

lol the big names will always be in the race and if they don't make it then they shouldn't be in it plain and simple. Just like how the NHRA does it and i love it.

So if a tire blows in qualifying and the driver crashes without posting a lap time they shouldn't be in the race?

Still, Pemberton believes, there is precedent to keep some provisional starting spots.
''There's always a place for provisionals and there always has been for someone who's had a bad day,'' he said. ''But you don't know where that will fall.''
Kinda sounds like there would be some provisionals so im sure they would figure something out if a scenario like that happened.
