Matt Barnes (signs with Pacers; 3 years, 7.5M)

    Matt Barnes,

The Portland Trailblazers love your defense off the bench as well as your great tattoos and want you to become our backup small forward. We have a great chance to win a title this season led by two of the great young players in the game in Russell Westbrook and Andrew Bynum. You should be wide open for 3's all season long with Westbrook in non stop attack mode and Bynum beasting in the paint.

We offer you the 1 year minimum for $1,229,255 with a player option for the 2nd year at the same price.

    Mr. Barnes,

The Indiana Pacers want to extend you an opportunity to play for a championship contender and be a key contributor. We are in the process of building one of the best rotations in the entire league and this team could use your defense, your heart, your toughness off the bench. We can promise you minutes behind both Wade at SG as well as behind Granger at SF. We can guarantee you between 15-20 MPG.

We love what you bring to the table and believe you are the perfect fit to come off the bench for us. Come help Indiana win a ring Mr. Barnes.

We will extend you a 1 year veteran minimum deal worth $1,229,255.

    Mr. Barnes

With Boris Diaw signing on we have added to our very deep bench consisted of veterans and we fill you are the final and missing piece. You would be the primary backup small forward behind Nicolas Batum where you will land more minutes in the playoffs compared to playing behind Danny Granger. Plus the Pacers have Hedo Turkoglu already as a backup small forward. So well they say 15-20 minutes is nice, it might not be possible, especially come playoff time. In Portland you are the only primary small forward and Shawne Williams will play minimal minutes at most. Help us win a ring Matt!

    Mr. Barnes,

We believe that you are a winner and you desire to be on a team that gas the right mesh of veteran and young talent. When we realized that your services could still be attained we reached out and hope you will see how serious we are about having you be an integral part of our rotation.

The fact is, we can promise you 15-20 minutes per game within our already deep rotation because of your defensive ability.

We don't want to share with everyone our potential rotations but if your agent desires, we can message him exactly how we plan to get you those minutes as well as the versatility of our line-up.

This roster we have assembled isn't the way the Blazers are making it to be in that its just insert player here in this slot on our depth chart. We have prided ourselves in building not just arguably the best team in the league, but one of the most versatile teams offensively, defensively, and our ability to be very flexible with our line-ups.

The Blazers are a great young team with a high ceiling and their front office has done a great job in reshaping that team for both now and the future, but if your goal is to be a contributor to a championship caliber team with the perfect balance of winning now. Indiana is the place to be Mr. Barnes.

We don't want this to sound as a slight to Portland, as we have really liked what that front office has done this offseason.

Financially, Matt was hoping for a little more than the vets minimum but he won't turn his nose up at these offers just yet.

As far as the situation and a championship (important at this stage of his career) goes, he really feels like he would have a better chance to win in Indiana than Portland. He does, however, see more capacity to contribute in a meaningful role in Portland than with the Pacers. He thinks he'll find more minutes playing behind Wes Matthews and Nicolas Batum than Danny Granger and Dwyane Wade.

My client is liking both of the offers right now, but is not ready to make a decision.

    Mr. Barnes,

We believe that if you were to come to Indiana we can guarantee you getting 15-20 minutes in our rotation. Although we have Hedo on our roster, he is capable of playing behind both Danny and Josh at the SF/PF positions. Our front-court with your addition would make for one of the deepest, most versatile frontcourts in the entire league.

As I stated, you'd also be able to play some minutes behind Dwyane as Alonzo is a very ripe player still developing and so with your addition it would only solidify our back-up SG spot that much more.

The fact is on our depth chart you would be directly behind Mr. Wade and receiving a majority or the bulk of those minutes, and at SF you'd split those back-up minutes. Easily equating to more than 15 MPG. The way I envision it is you'd be playing a solid 20 minutes in our rotation.

We would love to send your agent a look at how we plan on dispersing the minutes within our depth chart with your addition to our team.

Once again, Mr. Barnes, this is your chance to win a title with a team absolutely primed to win it this season.

    Thank you.

    Matt,

The Knicks are rather pleased to have come to terms with the Lakers in return for your services. We have compiled one of the deepest and most talented teams in basketball and we want to add you to that roster. Quite frankly Matt, you bring what we might consider the only weakness on our team; toughness, a mean streak, and gritty hard-nosed defense. Currently, you would fill in at the back-up 2 and 3 spots for roughly 10-15 minutes a game. Do not let the depth of our team fool you into thinking there's no PT available for you; we've carefully put together a roster where players can fill in at 2 or even 3 positions. We envision that same kind of role for you to come in and play that hard-nosed defense you are so well known for. This team is a title contender Matt, make no mistake about it. This in mind, here is the contract we are prepared to offer:

    Year 1: $4,500,000
    Year 2: $4,702,500
    Year 3: $4,914,112(PO)
    Year 4: $5,135,247(PO)

    4 years/$ 19,251,859 million

At this stage in your career Matt, this could be your last chance to receive a big contract. We're offering you a great financial deal over 4 years to come play a role on a championship contender. We hope to hear back from you soon.

    Sincerely,

    NYK Management

    Mr. Barnes,

Although the Lakers/Knicks have made a better financial offer to you then we can provide or offer. We just want to remind you that you have never in your career struggled to find a home. You've gone from team to team searching to find a team that can help you win that ring.

Here at Indiana is that team that can help you attain the goal of winning that long sought out championship.

We have the perfect combination of youth and veteran talent.

We just want to state that the New York Knicks have done a wonderful job of building a talented roster but we still believe despite the difference in financial offers, that Indiana is the perfect place for you to have a great chance at winning a title.

Mr. Barnes, we will respect any decision you make but we would love for you to be here in Indiana with us.

We look forward to hearing from you soon.

    Mr. Barnes,

While we earlier promised you 15-20 minutes, I believe we could get you 20 minutes a night with the possibility of 25 minutes on a good night for you. While I'm sure you are looking at our depth chart and see 2 other SFs in front of you and are wondering how you'd get those minutes, we'd like to assure you that the Pacers aren't one of those organizations that gets bogged down by positional requirements. The Pacers will look at skill sets and we feel you have a skill set- primarily great defense - that the Pacers would use.

The way we see it is that you are capable of playing both SG and SF and maybe even a little PF (as you've done in the past). We see Hedo as a player capable of playing both SF and PF. And even Granger could play some PF as he did for Indiana in 2010-11 (playing 18% of the teams minutes at PF). Bass and Smoove could play some Center if we were to go small. Basically, we would let the matchup and our players skill sets dictate who plays where, not the "SF" position.

As for why we'd love to have you on the team, we feel you could bring some great defense off the bench and would compliment guys like Hedo well. Hedo would not have to worry about defense with you on the team and you would benefit from Hedo's playmaking getting open 3 point shots. But we wouldn't just play you with Hedo, you could see time with Wade or Curry. And we STRONGLY feel your great defense would mean you'd find valuable minutes on the Pacers. Don't get caught up in us having 2 SFs already- that doesn't mean anything, especially when all of our guys can play multiple positions.

Some of the different lineup combinations we could have:
Curry-Wade-YOU-Smoove-Hibbert should Mr Granger need a rest and we need some defense.

Wade-YOU-Hedo-Smoove-Hibbert where Wade could play the point and between him and Hedo, we'd have the playmaking. You would provide the excellent perimeter defense.

Curry-Wade-YOU-Granger-Hibbert/Smoove or Bass- Granger played some PF in 2010-11 and in spot minutes, he could do so again. We see this lineup as very dangerous due to its ability to space the floor but we'd also have some excellent defense with you obviously contributing.

These are just some of the lineups we feel would work and obviously there are MANY more. The main point is we hope you see how well you'd fit with our team. Your skills compliment each of our other players VERY well.

Finally, as my Co-GMs have already stated, we are a championship contender and you would have an excellent shot to compete for one should you join the Pacers. As I've shown you here, we'd find minutes for you. If you have any concerns about exact minute breakdowns, you may PM us but we hope you understand that the Pacers will go based on matchups and what works and you should not look at us having 2 SFs as a reason you'd see less playing time.

Matt was very pleased with Indiana's sales pitch and the commitment they displayed by increasing the amount of money in his deal. My client hopes to help bring the championship to Indiana next season.

Matt Barnes signs with the Indiana Pacers for 3 years, 7.5M.
