Blues offseason moves, interest in Morrow and Doan

The Blues had a strong desire to bring Jamie Langenbrunner back next season, but at a reasonable rate. While the team waited for Langenbrunner's answer, general manager Doug Armstrong worked on a trade, clearing a potential logjam of third- and fourth-line forwards.

In corresponding steps Tuesday, the Blues re-signed Langenbrunner to a one-year contract extension and traded B.J. Crombeen to Tampa Bay.

Blues general manager Doug Armstrong has acknowledged being involved in trade talks recently and now those discussions could be leading to a deal soon.

The Blues have prioritized adding a top-four defenseman this offseason, and after failing to land one in free agency, the trade route may be the club's only option. But while that search continues, Armstrong might have found a veteran forward to add to the mix.

Dallas captain Brenden Morrow is believed to be available and the Blues may have interest. They might not be the only team asking about Morrow, as the New York Rangers, San Jose Sharks and Los Angeles Kings may also be in contact with the Stars.

The Blues are among 11 teams who have contacted the camp of NHL veteran Shane Doan, who is currently an unrestricted free agent.

"Yes, there has been interest," Doan's agent, Terry Bross of Lagardere Unlimited, wrote in an email to the Post-Dispatch today.

Doan, the longstanding captain of the Phoenix Coyotes, is perhaps the most attractive free agent remaining on the market. The 35-year-old right winger has played 17 seasons, registering 318 goals and 788 points in 1,198 games. He has participated in five World Championships with Team Canada, winning gold twice.

QUESTION: Carlo Colaiacovo is now an unrestricted free agent. Do you think there is any chance Colaiacovo will return to the Blues next season? Would he rank among the teamís top six defensemen at this point?

Will miss Crombeen. Getting Doan for our top 2 lines or Morrow for our 3rd has me really intrigued. Would allow us to put someone like Schwartz in Peoria for a little bit to let him develop.
