It's something he had to do, especially with Salo gone.
Hamhuis - Bieksa
Edler - Garrison
Ballard - Tanev
Good enough...
Time to focus on forwards now..

4.6 is a solid number. Was hoping for lower, but I can live with it. Just glad we got him!

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=399733The Vancouver Canucks have come to terms on a six-year, $27.6 contract with free agent defenceman Jason Garrison.
The 27-year-old set career-highs with 16 goals and 17 assists in 77 games with the Florida Panthers in 2011-12.
Originally signed as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Minnesota-Duluth by the Panthers in 2008, Garrison has scored 23 goals and 36 assists in 190 career games.
He set the Panthers single-season record for goals by a defenceman this past season.
https://twitter.com/imacVanSun/statu...83890766036992Makes sense now: question of Garrison at 4.6 or Salo at 3.75 isn't really a question. Age, health, prime on Garrison's side.

I understand Mac's point but we still need to see Garrison reproduce his last season. His resume is thin for 4.6M per over 6 years but I'm excited to have some new talent on the blueline.
So it is true that he took a hometown discount:
https://twitter.com/TSNBobMcKenzie/s...87254790787074Garrison left $ on table - was offered "Wideman money" elsewhere - but wanted to play for hometown VAN, which held firm on internal $ scale.

No doubt Gillis deserves props for the financial work on the deal.
Question: does this indicate that the Canucks feel all their offensive problems were because they lacked on offensive D man last year? Honest question. Is this the extent of the offensive upgrade we're going to see?
thoughts?
Not to overlook your question Ink, but i just wanted to Post notes from MG:
https://twitter.com/#!/VanCanucksJason was "high priority" on our list. The signing had "nothing to do with Justin Schultz" - Mike Gillis
We're trying to build a team to take us to the Stanley Cup. Jason wanted to play on a Team that would go there. - Mike Gillis
On Sami Salo - "We're going to miss him a lot. I think Sami has made a wonderful deal for himself. I wish him the best." - Gillis
Gillis on goalies - "That was not our priority today. We are making the best decisions for this organization."

That's a good deal given some of the other ridiculous deals given to defensemen in the past few weeks. Great addition.
At 4.6, Garrison is overpaid, but its a STEAL for the Canucks in this market. I read it on twitter too but without having read it, I can guarantee you he got Wideman money from somebody. SHOCKED that he turned that down but also happy to see someone actually choose a team to play for over a few million rather than just go for the money.
